The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is investigating the loss of motive power in 2021-2024 Jeep Wrangler 4xe vehicles, affecting an estimated 94,275 units. This investigation aims to assess the severity of the defect and the effectiveness of previous recall actions.

Key Highlights:

  • NHTSA Action Number: RQ24012
  • Components Involved: Electrical System, Engine
  • Investigation Period: July 5, 2024 – Present
  • Manufacturer: Chrysler (FCA US, LLC)
  • Affected Products: 2021-2024 Jeep Wrangler 4xe PHEV
  • Estimated Population: 94,275 vehicles

Problem Description:

The Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) has identified 68 Vehicle Owner Questionnaire (VOQ) reports for model years 2021 through 2024 Jeep Wrangler 4xe vehicles alleging a loss of motive power. Recall 22V-865 was issued to address an engine shutdown condition in certain MY 2021-2023 Wrangler 4xe vehicles. However, the complaints noted here include both post-recall remedy failures and failures in vehicles not covered by recall 22V-865.

Summary of Findings:

  • Comparative Analysis: An analysis comparing complaints received before the issuance of recall 22V-865 and complaints outside the scope of the recall has been conducted.
  • Higher Complaint Rate: The results show the current complaint rate is higher in out-of-scope vehicles than it was for vehicles later covered by the recall.

Next Steps:

ODI is opening this Recall Query (RQ) to assess the severity of the alleged defect in vehicles not included in recall 22V-865. ODI will also assess the scope and remedy effectiveness of the recall. For more details and to review the ODI reports cited in the Opening Resume ODI Report Identification Number document, visit NHTSA.gov.

By thoroughly investigating these issues, the NHTSA aims to ensure the safety and reliability of affected Jeep Wrangler 4xe vehicles, addressing any potential risks to drivers and passengers.
