S44 Energy, a company specializing in electric vehicle (EV) charging software, has announced the launch of TopazEV, described as the industry’s first Open-as-a-Service (OaaS) charge station management software (CSMS). TopazEV aims to provide charge point operators (CPOs), fleet managers, retailers, and utility companies with enhanced flexibility to launch, manage, and expand their EV charging networks. The platform is designed to eliminate common industry pain points such as vendor lock-in, per-session fees, and limitations related to communication protocols.
Key Highlights
- Industry-First OaaS Model: TopazEV introduces an Open-as-a-Service approach for EV charge station management, offering flexibility and cost-efficiency.
- Eliminates Vendor Lock-In: Provides operators the freedom to choose hardware and integrate with various systems without being tied to a single vendor.
- Reduces Operational Costs: Aims to cut expenses by avoiding per-session fees and offering scalable pricing models.
- Supports Open Standards: Compatible with key industry protocols like OCPP 1.6, OCPP 2.0.1, OCPI 2.2.1, and ISO 15118, ensuring broad hardware compatibility and future-proofing.
- User-Focused Design: Features an intuitive interface for daily operations, including real-time charger status, network statistics, and session tracking.
- API-First Architecture: Facilitates seamless integration with existing billing systems, Customer Relationship Management (CRM) tools, and analytics platforms.
The launch of TopazEV occurs as the EV charging sector navigates fluctuating federal subsidies and increasing pressure to develop reliable and scalable infrastructure. Despite the presence of over 250,000 public fast chargers in the U.S., EV adoption rates continue to trail those in China and Europe. A significant factor contributing to this slower adoption is consumer anxiety about charger availability, a concern underscored by data indicating that approximately one in five charging attempts fail, frequently due to software-related problems.
“Whether you’re standing up a pilot site or running a nationwide network, TopazEV delivers the control of open architecture with the simplicity of a managed platform,” stated Olga Haygood, CEO of S44 Energy. “You get the flexibility to scale and the freedom to integrate at a price that grows with you, not against you.”
TopazEV is engineered as a modern CSMS tailored for the needs of contemporary CPOs, fleets, and utilities. It grants operators complete control over their networks through a real-time dashboard. The platform supports essential features like Plug & Charge and roaming, and is prepared for next-generation capabilities such as hardware monitoring and Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) integration. Its design prioritizes easy integration with third-party tools via REST APIs, GraphQL, and Webhooks.
S44 Energy highlights several key differentiators for TopazEV. Its comprehensive support for both legacy and current charging standards promotes network interoperability and future-readiness. The platform features a clean, intuitive user interface designed for operational efficiency, providing live status updates, fault alerts, charging statistics, and asset provisioning. Furthermore, its API-first and integration-friendly nature simplifies connections with other business systems, allowing operators to retain intellectual property and build customized tech stacks.
TopazEV is available through two distinct models: an Open-as-a-Service (OaaS) subscription, hosted by S44 Energy or on a client’s preferred platform for a setup fee, ideal for rapid deployment and growing networks; and a Business Source License (BSL), a one-time license granting enterprises full codebase ownership for independent implementation. Both models are designed to offer full control, transparency, and scalability.
S44 Energy has a history of over a decade in creating EV charging software for automotive original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and leading EV network operators. The company emphasizes its commitment to open standards, innovation, and sustainability to support the global transition to electric mobility.
