Operational since 1965, the Ghent plant received major upgrades for EX30 production. Volvo invested 200 million euros, adding a new car platform, nearly 600 new or refurbished robots, and expanding the battery hall. New production lines for doors and battery packs were also introduced.
The expansion brings 350 new jobs, increasing the plant’s workforce to nearly 6,600 employees. This move supports the European Union’s goals for sustainability and competitiveness, promoting innovation and electrification in the automotive industry.
Francesca Gamboni, Volvo’s Chief Manufacturing and Supply Chain Officer, stated: “The EX30 is vital as we bolster our premium EV market position in Europe. Producing it in Ghent aligns with our strategy to build cars where they sell best.”
Stefan Fesser, Ghent plant manager, added: “Our team halved the industrialization time, showcasing how innovation allows us to adapt quickly to market needs.”
The Ghent plant now produces multiple electrified models, including the EX40, EC40, XC40, and V60 hybrids, alongside the EX30. In 2024, it manufactured over 186,000 cars, playing a major role in Volvo’s global output.
This development enhances Volvo’s standing in Europe’s electric vehicle market while highlighting its dedication to sustainable and innovative manufacturing practices.
