BMW Group Plant Landshut is increasing its production capabilities with a significant expansion focused on electric mobility components. A substantial €200 million investment has been allocated to develop the manufacturing facilities for the central housing of electric drive units, specifically for the upcoming Neue Klasse models. This investment contributes to a total of €1 billion injected into the site since 2020, with half of that amount dedicated to enhancing electric mobility capabilities.

Key Highlights:

  • €1 billion total investment in Plant Landshut since 2020
  • Expansion to increase production capacity for electric drive unit housings by 30%
  • New 12,000 square metre production hall being constructed
  • Adoption of injector casting process to improve efficiency and reduce emissions
  • Strategic 30,000 square metre land acquisition for future expansions
  • Introduction of advanced 3D printing technology for sand core production in engine manufacturing
  • Comprehensive ongoing training programs to support workforce adaptation to new technologies

Thomas Thym, Head of BMW Group Plant Landshut, emphasized the strategic advancements, stating, “We are continuously expanding our site’s expertise in both the production of our cutting-edge components and the development of new technologies.” He highlighted the flexibility that such advancements grant the facility amidst evolving industry demands.

The plant is not only enhancing its infrastructure but is also focusing on reducing environmental impact. A new production hall that spans three levels is underway, where the innovative injector casting technique will be utilized. This method is notable for its ability to optimize mechanical properties of components while lowering energy consumption and reducing carbon emissions.

Adjacent to the main plant, BMW Group has secured an additional plot of land, priming the site for further growth and responsiveness to future production needs. Though plans for this new space are pending, it underscores BMW’s commitment to long-term development strategies.

Additionally, the facility is advancing in technology with significant investments in large-scale 3D printing for producing complex sand cores, used across multiple BMW engine variants globally.

Supporting the transformation, a broad-based training initiative has been launched, targeting skills in robotics, quality and process management, and other critical areas. Anna Sponsel, Head of Human Resources, remarked on the initiative: “I am convinced that targeted training modules are exactly what we need to address the changing skill requirements in our industry and counter the shortage of specialist workers.”

As BMW Group Plant Landshut continues to adapt and expand, its role within the larger BMW manufacturing network remains crucial, particularly in its contributions to the company’s evolving electric and ICE vehicle components. This ongoing development not only supports BMW’s technological advancement but also bolsters the regional economy by creating numerous job opportunities.
