Coreshell, a leader in battery technology, has announced the debut of the first commercial-scale 60 Ah battery cells featuring an anode composed entirely of domestically sourced metallurgical silicon (MG-Si). These innovative battery cells boast a tenfold increase in specific capacity compared to traditional graphite anodes, reducing material costs by up to 50 percent and cutting carbon emissions by 29 percent. The move marks a significant step in addressing supply chain vulnerabilities and enhancing sustainability within the electric vehicle (EV) industry.
Key Highlights
- Enhanced Specific Capacity: Coreshell’s MG-Si anodes deliver 10x the capacity of graphite, advancing EV battery performance.
- Cost Efficiency: Material costs are reduced by 50 percent compared to graphite-based batteries.
- Sustainability Focus: Carbon emissions are 29 percent lower than traditional LFP/graphite batteries, per life cycle assessments.
- Domestic Sourcing Advantage: 100 percent U.S.-based MG-Si minimizes reliance on Chinese-controlled graphite supply chains.
- Scalable Production: Initial manufacturing begins at Coreshell’s 4 MWh facility, with a 100 MWh facility in planning.
Coreshell’s breakthrough offers a critical alternative to graphite, a material currently dominated by Chinese suppliers, holding over 93 percent of the global supply chain. By utilizing domestically sourced MG-Si, the company mitigates supply risks while advancing battery cost and performance.
Revolutionary Technology for EV Adoption
Coreshell’s 60 Ah battery cells employ low-cost metallurgical silicon in combination with lithium iron phosphate (LFP) cathodes, creating a scalable solution for mass-market EVs. Unlike synthetic silicon, which is cost-prohibitive, Coreshell’s process incorporates affordable MG-Si, achieving greater energy density without compromising durability. The cells are produced using widely available manufacturing infrastructure, enabling seamless integration into existing production lines.
Industry Backing
Coreshell’s innovation has garnered significant industry support. Benoist Ollivier, Chief Technology & Innovation Officer at Ferroglobe, stated, “Coreshell offers the most viable pathway to mass-market EV adoption, reducing costs and CO2 footprints.” Similarly, Hinrich Woebcken, former CEO of Volkswagen Group of America, emphasized the importance of addressing cost and scalability for EV growth, noting, “Coreshell is positioned to tackle these challenges head-on.”
Addressing Silicon’s Historical Challenges
Traditional silicon anodes have been plagued by swelling and degradation issues. Coreshell’s proprietary layer-by-layer coating technology resolves these challenges, allowing for the use of larger silicon particles and ensuring long-lasting performance. This innovative approach leverages MG-Si’s potential while maintaining a low-cost, scalable production process.
