Polestar Launches 2022 Global Design Contest

Gothenburg – Aspiring designers, both professional and student, are challenged to create exciting visions for future Polestar concepts in the annual Polestar Design Contest. Themed around ‘Performance’, this contest provides an opportunity for all those passionate about design to showcase their skills and be in with a chance of seeing their work come to life. There are no limits – so let your imagination run wild and create something truly unique that embodies the Polestar brand.

The Polestar Design Contest is uniquely structured to provide shortlisted participants with one-on-one coaching from Polestar designers, a modeling team that supports finalists digitally, and hard model production of winning designs. This year, the winning design will be produced as a full-size 1:1 scale model and showcased on the Polestar stand at Auto Shanghai in April 2023.

Maximilian Missoni, Head of Design at Polestar, comments: “For a design to be presented on the world stage in much the same way as one of Polestar’s own concept cars is a money-can’t-buy opportunity for any designer. We want to encourage, support, and celebrate innovative design and the people who realize it. What better way to do that than to present a full-size model* of their creation center stage at one of the largest automotive shows in the world?”

The 2022 Polestar contest brief is to design a car that breaks from the traditional 20th-century conception of high-consumption performance. The goal is to create a new form of ‘Performance’ that is environmentally sustainable. This will require advanced technical solutions and an innovative design.

Juan Pablo Bernal, Interior Design Manager at Polestar, founder of the Polestar Design Contest, and curator of the @polestardesigncommunity Instagram page, comments: “I believe this year’s ‘Performance’ theme will capture the imagination of a design community that has responded extremely creatively to our Design Contest thus far. I’ve been truly inspired by the array of submissions that continue to harness the essence of our brand in such a captivating way. We expect this year will be no different – the paradigm has shifted from the high-consumption performance of the 20th century, so we are looking for design ideas that embody that shift.”

The Polestar Design Contest is a renowned event for students and professional designers alike, showcasing some of the most innovative and cutting-edge concepts in the automotive industry. Previous years have featured ground-breaking designs such as a car with onboard and externally visible air filters to tackle local pollution, an electric-and-helium airship, prosthetic springboard blades for walking, and a luxury yacht that exudes Polestar’s minimalistic design tonality.

The KOJA micro-space tree house by Finnish designer Kristian Talvitie has been brought to life this summer at the renowned Fiskars Art & Design Biennale in Finland. It’s the first submission to be realized in full scale, and it’s sure to impress visitors with its creative design and functional use of space.
