ABB EV Charger Wins Global Awards

The A400 charger was honored with two iF Design Awards on April 28 in Berlin. The first was the esteemed iF Design Award in Gold for User Interface Design, and the second was the iF Design Award for User Experience Design. The iF Design Award, established in 1954, is one of the world’s most renowned design accolades, celebrating excellence in industrial design, innovation, and usability. The 2025 awards saw nearly 11,000 entries from 66 countries, demonstrating the increasing significance of user experience in technology-driven fields like e-mobility.

The judging panel lauded the A400 charger for its seamless user experience and user-centric design. Specifically, the A400’s interface, presented on a 32-inch front-facing screen, received Gold. The jury noted, “This EV charging station balances a concise and unobtrusive physical form with a highly accessible UX. The deft interplay of static and dynamic graphics and the coherent color scheme allow information and processes to be presented in a clear and appealing way. This design impressively streamlines the EV charging experience.”

For ABB E-mobility, design extends beyond aesthetics; it is a fundamental component of operational excellence. The company believes that well-designed charging systems can reduce user errors, lower service costs, and improve uptime. Their design philosophy is clear: an EV charger should be as intuitive to use as a smartphone and integrate smoothly into its surroundings. Design is viewed as a system-level decision, not merely a surface detail.

This philosophy drives ABB E-mobility to continuously refine its solutions, with user experience and design serving as key pillars of development. Recent design enhancements, unveiled alongside their latest product launch, incorporate direct feedback from customers and end-users. This approach aims to make EV charging more inclusive, accessible, and efficient for both new and experienced EV drivers.

Further underscoring its design prowess, ABB E-mobility’s A400 charger was also selected as a 2025 Red Dot Award winner in the Product Design category. The Red Dot Award is another globally respected design competition, recognizing outstanding innovation, quality, and usability. The official recognition for this award is scheduled for the Red Dot Designers’ Night on July 8 in Essen, Germany.

Rhys Newman, Head of Design and User Experience at ABB E-mobility, commented on the significance of these accolades. “Charging should feel natural, not technical,” Newman stated. “Winning key design awards such as the iF and Red Dot award confirms our belief that smart, thoughtful design does not only shape the acceptance of e-mobility but is also a driver of EV adoption. Whether you’re a fleet operator, commuter, or retail customer, experience shapes trust. And trust drives transformation.” These awards affirm ABB E-mobility’s strategy of prioritizing design to foster greater adoption of electric vehicles.
