Ample, a leader in battery swapping technology, is set to deploy a network of swapping stations in Tokyo, with cooperation from Mitsubishi Fuso Truck and Bus Corporation and Mitsubishi Motors Corporation in deploying battery swapping EVs. This initiative, supported by a grant from the Tokyo Metropolitan Environmental Public Corporation, focuses on accelerating the electrification of commercial fleets, particularly in the logistics sector, to help Tokyo achieve its goal of cutting greenhouse gas emissions by 50% by 2030.

Key Highlights:

  • Previous success: Ample’s Kyoto deployment demonstrated fast charging and reduced grid load.
  • Ideal location: Tokyo’s large commercial delivery market and dense urban environment.
  • Strategic partnerships: Collaboration with Mitsubishi Fuso and Mitsubishi Motors.
  • Innovative technology: Ample’s modular batteries offer a five-minute full charge for any EV.

Ample’s battery swapping technology offers a compelling solution to the challenges of EV adoption in Japan. With long charging times and limited space in dense urban areas, traditional charging infrastructure can be impractical for high-utilization vehicles like delivery fleets. Ample’s modular batteries are designed to be a direct replacement for original EV batteries, making the technology compatible with any EV model. The swapping process takes just five minutes, providing a full charge quickly and efficiently. Moreover, Ample’s compact swapping stations can be deployed rapidly, requiring only a few days for installation.

As Khaled Hassounah, CEO of Ample, stated, “Tokyo is one of the world’s most advanced cities in sustainable urban development and one of the largest markets for commercial deliveries, making it the perfect place for our next deployments as we expand our presence in Japan. By providing a fast and scalable solution for commercial fleets, we’re helping the City of Tokyo set an example for how densely populated cities can electrify. We’re honored that the Tokyo Metropolitan Environmental Public Corporation has selected Ample and its Japanese partners to demonstrate the potential of EV battery swapping.”

This initiative not only supports Tokyo’s environmental goals but also positions Japan as a leader in innovative EV infrastructure, potentially accelerating the transition to electric mobility in one of the world’s largest automotive markets. With each station capable of supporting over 100 vehicles, Ample’s expansion into Tokyo builds on its successful Kyoto demonstration, addressing Japan’s unique electrification challenges with a practical and scalable solution.
