BYD Speeds Up EV Charging

BYD, the global leader in new-energy vehicles, has launched the Super e-Platform, a game-changing electric vehicle architecture that rivals gasoline car refueling speeds. Unveiled in Shenzhen, this platform delivers a one-megawatt (1,000kW) charging capacity—the highest for mass-produced EVs—adding two kilometers of range per second and offering a five-minute flash charge for 400 kilometers of driving range. With upgraded components and a top speed exceeding 300 km/h, BYD aims to erase charging anxiety and redefine electric mobility.

Key Highlights

  • Unmatched Charging Speed: Achieves a world-record five-minute charge for 400 kilometers, matching gas car convenience.
  • Powerful Performance: Boasts a 580kW motor hitting 30,000rpm, powering models like HAN L and TANG L past 300 km/h.
  • Advanced Tech: Features an “all-domain kilovolt high-voltage architecture” and a Flash Charging Battery with 1,000A current and 10C rate.
  • Charging Network: BYD plans over 4,000 megawatt flash-charging stations in China, supported by 1,360kW liquid-cooled terminals and dual-gun charging for public charger compatibility.

The Super e-Platform upgrades core components—motor, battery, and controls—setting new benchmarks. Its silicon carbide (SiC) power chip, rated at 1,500V, is a mass-production first, enhancing efficiency. BYD’s Chairman Wang Chuanfu said at the launch: “To completely eliminate users’ charging anxiety, our goal is to make EV charging as fast as refueling a gasoline car – achieving ‘oil-electric parity’ in charging speed.” This parity hinges on combining ultra-high voltage and current, enabled by the platform’s pioneering kilovolt-level design across battery, motor, and more.

To support this, BYD developed a 1,360kW flash-charging system and innovative “intelligent boost” tech, upgrading existing chargers. With 4,000+ stations planned, BYD ensures accessibility. This blend of cutting-edge platform, infrastructure, and compatibility cements China’s lead in electrification, offering drivers a seamless, rapid-charging future.
