Honda Plans 15 Next-Generation Hybrid Models By 2030

Honda will launch 15 next-generation hybrid models globally by March 2030, revealing the Honda Hybrid Sedan Prototype and Acura Hybrid SUV Prototype at a Tokyo business briefing. Production expands across Ohio plants.

Honda will launch 15 next-generation hybrid models globally by the end of fiscal year March 2030, with North America as the primary market and large-size D-segment hybrids arriving in 2029. Global CEO Toshihiro Mibe revealed the plan at a business briefing in Tokyo, where the company also presented world premieres of the Honda Hybrid Sedan Prototype and the Acura Hybrid SUV Prototype, both scheduled to go on sale within the next two years. Honda detailed the strategy in its summary of the 2026 business briefing, positioning the reallocation of development and production resources toward hybrids as central to rebuilding its automobile business over the next three years.

Highlights

  • 15 next-generation hybrid models planned globally by March 2030, primarily for North America
  • Two world-premiere prototypes revealed: Honda Hybrid Sedan and Acura Hybrid SUV, both on sale within two years
  • Next-generation hybrid system targets more than 10% fuel economy improvement and 30% system cost reduction versus the hybrid system introduced in 2023
  • Large-size D-segment or larger hybrid models launching in North America in 2029
  • Next-generation ADAS planned for 2028 market launch, with application to more than 15 models over a five-year period

Two Prototypes Anchor The Next-Generation Lineup

The Honda Hybrid Sedan Prototype and the Acura Hybrid SUV Prototype made their world debut at the Tokyo briefing. Both vehicles preview the next-generation hybrid system and platform Honda will introduce starting in 2027 for the Honda brand and within the next two years for Acura. The Acura prototype represents the brand’s first model on the all-new hybrid system and next-generation platform.

The two prototypes are the first of 15 next-generation hybrid models the company plans to roll out globally — primarily in North America — by the end of fiscal year March 2030. In 2029, Honda will add large-size hybrid models in the D-segment or above for the North American market.

Next-Generation Two-Motor Hybrid System

Honda’s next-generation hybrid powertrain builds on the two-motor hybrid system that anchors its current Civic, Accord, CR-V, and Prelude hybrid models. The company reports advancements that expand the range where the engine operates most efficiently and increase the driving efficiency of the hybrid unit.

Honda is targeting:

  • Fuel economy improvement of more than 10% versus current-generation hybrid models
  • System cost reduction of more than 30% compared to the hybrid system introduced in 2023
  • A newly developed electric AWD unit for highly precise and responsive motor control

The combined platform, system, and AWD package is positioned to deliver what the company describes as a Honda-unique driving experience.

Next-Generation ADAS In 2028

Honda also confirmed development progress on its next-generation advanced driver assistance system, with market launch planned for 2028. According to the company, the system will assist the driver with acceleration and steering throughout the entire route — across both expressways and surface roads — based on inputs to the navigation system. Honda plans to apply the next-generation ADAS to more than 15 models over a five-year period and to deploy it on hybrid models.

Manufacturing And Battery Realignment

To support the hybrid expansion, Honda will increase hybrid vehicle production at its Marysville and East Liberty auto plants in Ohio and make all Honda North America auto plants capable of producing hybrid models.

“Honda will reallocate more development and production resources into hybrid models to accelerate the market launch ahead of the original schedule and increase the number of compelling products,” said Toshihiro Mibe, global CEO of Honda Motor Co., Ltd. “We have made steady progress in the development of hybrid vehicle technologies, where Honda has strengths, based on our belief that hybrid models will continue to be the key to addressing environmental challenges.”

The company will also convert part of the EV battery production lines at L-H Battery Company — its joint venture with LG Energy Solution — to hybrid battery production. Local content for motor and inverter assemblies will increase by more than four times current levels, which Honda cites as a measure to reduce supply risk and mitigate the impact of U.S. tariffs.
