Hyundai Motor Company and Kia Corporation have introduced the Integrated Greenhouse Gas Information System (IGIS), a new platform designed to track, measure, and manage carbon emissions across global production operations. This initiative seeks to streamline carbon management throughout every stage of a vehicle’s lifecycle, reinforcing the companies’ commitment to sustainability and responsible manufacturing.

Key Highlights:

  • Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) methodology for precise carbon tracking
  • Blockchain technology to maintain secure and transparent data
  • Comprehensive carbon footprint analysis of supplier sites and components
  • Integration of existing systems, including the Supplier CO2 Emission Monitoring System (SCEMS)
  • Readiness for upcoming international environmental regulations and external certifications
Hyundai, Kia Launch IGIS Carbon Platform

By leveraging the LCA methodology, IGIS facilitates thorough data collection, ensuring emissions are measured accurately and consistently. This approach allows Hyundai Motor and Kia to monitor energy consumption throughout production facilities worldwide, capturing a holistic view of their carbon management activities. The system’s ability to track carbon footprint from supplier sites and components further enhances its scope, offering insights into the entire supply chain.

IGIS also incorporates blockchain technology to maintain data integrity, making it more difficult to tamper with or falsify records. This commitment to transparency not only supports reliable carbon emissions monitoring but also promotes trust among stakeholders. Through this robust platform, both companies gain a higher degree of confidence in the collected information, paving the way for responsible decision-making.

“In our mission to achieve carbon neutrality by 2045, we are taking a significant leap forward with the development of IGIS,” said Eunsook Jin, Executive Vice President and Head of ICT Division at Hyundai Motor and Kia. “Through IGIS, we are intensifying our efforts to build a responsible value chain, demonstrating remarkable innovation in the automotive industry.”

The launch of IGIS underscores Hyundai Motor and Kia’s evolving efforts to achieve carbon neutrality, building on the previous debut of SCEMS in 2023. By streamlining data management, the new system enhances operational efficiency through seamless integration with existing tools and processes. IGIS’s comprehensive approach to carbon emissions data will also enable both companies to adapt quickly to evolving global environmental regulations and fulfill external certifications such as CDP and RE100.

This groundbreaking platform highlights the manufacturers’ dedication to environmental responsibility and sustainability in the automotive sector. By adopting innovative technologies and a holistic approach to carbon management, Hyundai Motor and Kia continue to shape a future defined by responsible practices and a reduced environmental footprint.
