Hyzon has announced the start of production for its 200kW single-stack fuel cell system at its Bolingbrook, Illinois facility. This milestone positions the facility as one of the largest fully-integrated fuel cell production centers in the United States. The production of standardized fuel cell systems will help accelerate the decarbonization of heavy-duty industries, supporting Hyzon’s commitment to zero-emission solutions.
Key Highlights
- Start of production for the revolutionary 200kW single-stack fuel cell system.
- Facility in Bolingbrook is one of the largest fully-integrated fuel cell production centers in the U.S.
- Transition to full-scale manufacturing allows for standardized production of the fuel cell systems.
- The production capability is projected at 700 fuel cell systems per year.
- ISO 9001 certification expected for fuel cell manufacturing and design by Q4 2024.
The start of production (SOP) for the 200kW fuel cell system marks a shift for Hyzon from prototype development to full-scale standardized manufacturing. This transition is made possible by the fully integrated nature of the Bolingbrook facility, which allows Hyzon to handle everything from Membrane Electrode Assembly (MEA) production to the final fuel cell system. Unlike many other manufacturers that rely on external sourcing for components, Hyzon designs and produces its proprietary MEA, the core element of a fuel cell.
Hyzon Chief Executive Officer Parker Meeks expressed enthusiasm about the milestone: “Our Bolingbrook facility is one of the largest fully-integrated fuel cell systems production facilities in the United States and the only 200kW single-stack fuel system to be launched into serial production, a significant step for zero-emission technology manufacturing in the US. This milestone also represents another inflection point in our mission to decarbonize heavy-duty industries.”
The company’s Chief Technology Officer, Dr. Christian Mohrdieck, noted that the SOP allows Hyzon to produce standardized units at volume, highlighting Hyzon’s technological leadership in hydrogen fuel cell development. The proprietary seven-layer MEA is crucial to delivering high-performance, zero-emission solutions.
Chief Operating Officer Dr. Bappa Banerjee explained that Hyzon’s production line is capable of producing 700 fuel cell systems annually, with a focus on quality. The systems undergo in-line quality checks and rigorous end-of-line testing to ensure they meet all performance requirements. Banerjee stated, “All of this is done to ensure the performance of our vehicles meet or exceed the performance of diesel trucks on routes that include long stretches of steep grades as has been demonstrated during our customer trials.”
The company expects to achieve ISO 9001 certification for its manufacturing and design activities in Q4 2024, ensuring adherence to international quality standards. This certification will further support Hyzon’s goal of delivering safe, high-quality, and reliable solutions.
The announcement of SOP for the 200kW FCS follows the recent launch of Hyzon’s Class 8 200kW Fuel Cell Electric Truck (FCET). This announcement coincides with the celebration of the tenth annual National Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Day, recognizing the role of hydrogen in reducing carbon emissions and driving economic growth.
