Schneider National, Inc., a leader in transportation, intermodal, and logistics services, has achieved a groundbreaking milestone, surpassing six million zero-emission miles with its Freightliner eCascadia battery electric vehicle (BEV) fleet. This achievement underscores Schneider’s commitment to sustainability and reducing carbon emissions in the transportation industry.
Key Highlights:
- Environmental Impact: Schneider’s BEV fleet has eliminated over 20 million pounds of CO2 emissions, equivalent to removing 2,100 gas-powered passenger vehicles from the road for one year.
- Fleet Size and Infrastructure: The company operates one of North America’s largest BEV fleets, including nearly 100 Freightliner eCascadias, supported by a 32-port charging depot at its Southern California Operations Center.
- Industry Collaboration: Grants from agencies like the California Air Resources Board and partnerships with companies such as PepsiCo highlight cross-industry efforts to reduce emissions.
“Reaching six million zero-emission miles is a testament to our steadfast dedication to sustainability and innovation,” said Schneider President and CEO Mark Rourke. “Leading the way in adopting electric vehicle technology not only benefits the environment but also serves as an example of the broad service capabilities and flexibility we can offer to customers.”
Advancing Industry Collaboration and Community Impact
Schneider’s BEV fleet aligns with its aggressive sustainability goals while providing customers with innovative, eco-friendly transportation solutions. The company became the first third-party carrier to haul zero-emission shipments globally for PepsiCo, covering over 31,000 zero-emission miles in just a few months.
These efforts have also positively impacted communities in Southern California, where Schneider’s eCascadias operate. By reducing emissions, the fleet has contributed to improved air quality and public health, especially in disadvantaged areas. Support from programs like the Joint Electric Truck Scaling Initiative (JETSI) has been instrumental in funding these advancements.
Enhancing the Driver Experience
Schneider drivers have embraced the electric trucks, citing improvements in ride quality, reduced noise, and ease of operation. “Once you drive an electric truck, you won’t want to go back to a diesel truck,” said Schneider driver Marty Boots.
Beyond Electric Vehicles
Schneider’s sustainability strategy extends beyond BEVs, incorporating alternative solutions like renewable natural gas and hydrogen internal combustion engines. The company also utilizes biodiesel blends across its non-electric fleet to further reduce emissions. Schneider aims to achieve a 7.5% CO2 emissions reduction per mile by 2025 and a 60% reduction by 2035.
