InductEV, a pioneer in wireless EV charging, has joined the Zero Emissions Port Alliance (ZEPA) to support port decarbonization and make battery-electric container handling equipment (BE-CHE) more affordable and accessible. ZEPA estimates that over 120,000 container handling equipment units, responsible for 10-15 million tons of CO2e annually, must be decarbonized to meet environmental goals.

Key Highlights:

  • InductEV’s technology is operational at APM Terminals in Port Elizabeth, NJ, and is slated for deployment at a major West Coast port.
  • ZEPA aims to tackle barriers to BE-CHE adoption by addressing production, cost, and infrastructure challenges.
  • InductEV’s wireless on-route charging solutions reduce capital expenditures and enhance fleet utilization.
  • The company’s systems provide charging power from 75 kW to 450 kW, improving efficiency and driver safety.

InductEV’s Managing Director, James Wroe, expressed enthusiasm for ZEPA’s mission, stating, “We embrace the mission of ZEPA and share in its members’ vision for the electric future of the 940 container ports around the world. This industry is at a tipping point, and we’re excited to demonstrate the role wireless, opportunistic charging can play in this vital transformation.”

ZEPA’s Four Focus Areas:

  1. Scaling production capacity for battery-electric CHE to reduce costs and lead times.
  2. Lowering the cost of batteries and charging systems through standardization.
  3. Facilitating cost-efficient power infrastructure rollouts for BE-CHE and shore power.
  4. Improving market conditions to accelerate adoption of untethered battery-electric CHE.

InductEV’s innovative solution uses inductive charging pads, which activate when paired with an under-vehicle pad. Unlike traditional overnight charging, on-route wireless charging distributes energy use throughout the day, improving efficiency and reducing strain on power utilities.
