Jaguar Land Rover North America has issued a voluntary safety recall affecting 2,278 model year 2020–2021 Jaguar I-PACE electric vehicles. The recall, filed with NHTSA on Feb. 5, 2026, addresses a high-voltage battery pack that may experience thermal overload, potentially resulting in smoke or fire. The automaker is advising owners to park outside and away from structures until the recall repair is complete.
Highlights
- 2,278 Jaguar I-PACE EVs from the 2020 and 2021 model years are affected by NHTSA recall 26V067.
- High voltage battery packs supplied by LG Energy Solution may overheat due to folded anode tabs that can contribute to short circuits.
- An interim software fix will cap the state of charge at 90% while a permanent remedy is developed.
- Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed by April 3, 2026, with dealer notifications beginning Feb. 19, 2026.
Defect Details
The recall covers 454 model year 2021 I-PACE vehicles built at the Graz, Austria assembly plant from March 9, 2020, to June 10, 2021. It also covers 1,824 model year 2020 vehicles produced from April 8, 2019, to Jan. 8, 2020.
According to the recall filing, the high-voltage traction battery pack may experience thermal overload. Cell inspection and testing indicate that folded anode tabs can contribute to short circuits within the battery. However, the investigation remains ongoing, as secondary contributing conditions have not yet been determined.
The battery cells were supplied by LG Energy Solution Co., Ltd., manufactured at its facility in Biskupice Podgórne, Poland. Ten high-voltage battery pack assembly part numbers are listed in the recall.
Investigation Timeline
The recall follows a multi-year investigation that began after earlier recall campaigns H441, H459, and H471 (NHTSA recalls 23V369, 23V709, and 24V085). Protective diagnostic software was previously deployed to detect battery faults.
Through 2024, a small number of post-recall fire events were reported, primarily in 2019 model year vehicles in the United States. Jaguar Land Rover maintained open dialogue with NHTSA throughout the investigation.
Key milestones in the decision process include:
- August 2024: JLR’s Recall Determination Forum agreed to recall 2019 model year U.S. vehicles showing elevated failure risk. A state of charge cap was applied as an interim measure.
- November 2024: JLR determined the permanent remedy for those vehicles would be reacquisition of the affected units.
- January 27, 2026: Additional similar reports from markets outside the U.S. prompted further review.
- January 29, 2026: JLR’s Product Safety and Compliance Committee Decision Forum authorized a new safety recall covering all vehicles with 2021 model year or earlier battery packs.
Remedy and Owner Precautions
As an interim repair, affected vehicles will receive a software update restricting the maximum state of charge to 90%. The update can be installed by a dealer or delivered over the air. There is no charge for the repair.
Until the interim fix is applied, JLR is advising owners to take the following precautions:
- Charge only to 90% state of charge maximum.
- Park away from structures.
- Charge outside only.
Owners can monitor charging through the latest version of the Jaguar Remote App or through the vehicle’s in-cabin display. JLR recommends physically unplugging the charging cable when the vehicle reaches 90% state of charge.
The permanent remedy is currently under development and will be administered under JLR campaign code H572. For 2021 model year vehicles, the interim repair falls under campaign code H571. Earlier vehicles fall under campaign code H570.
Production Correction
LG Energy Solution informed JLR that it implemented quality improvements to its cell production line through October 2020. Design and process changes were made at that time to address the risk of torn tabs and other manufacturing concerns. Production traceability records confirm that cells manufactured before those changes were all installed in vehicles produced prior to the 2022 model year. Field data for 2022 model year vehicles and later shows no elevated risk pattern.
Recall Schedule
Dealer notifications are set for Feb. 19, 2026. Owner notification letters will be distributed on or before April 3, 2026. JLR has not received any reports of accidents, injuries, or fires in the U.S. among the affected vehicle population with protective software installed.
