Mazda Motor Corporation is set to construct a module pack plant for cylindrical lithium-ion batteries in Iwakuni City, Yamaguchi Prefecture, Japan. The facility will produce battery packs for Mazda’s first battery electric vehicle (BEV) built on a dedicated EV platform. Partnering with Panasonic Energy Co., Ltd., Mazda plans to achieve an annual production capacity of 10 GWh to support its electrification strategy.

Key Highlights:

  • Strategic Partnership: Mazda signed an agreement with Panasonic Energy in May 2023 for the supply of cylindrical lithium-ion batteries.
  • Production Certification: In September 2024, Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade, and Industry (METI) certified Mazda’s plan to expand battery production as part of a national strategy to ensure a stable supply of storage batteries.
  • Focus on Electrification: The battery packs will power unique BEVs offering advanced design, convenience, and extended driving range.
  • Economic Impact: The new plant is expected to contribute to local employment and regional economic development.

Mazda’s initiative aligns with its 2030 Management Policy, which emphasizes electrification technologies through a multi-solution strategy designed to meet customer needs and regulatory demands. This approach aims to address environmental challenges such as global warming while providing diverse technological options.

The company remains committed to evolving its brand ethos of “Joy of Driving” and “Radically Human” experiences. By leveraging battery module packs from the new plant, Mazda intends to deliver electrified vehicles that blend innovative technology with an engaging driving experience. As a result, the automaker aims to offer “Joy of Living” by enhancing mobility and enriching customers’ daily lives.
