Nikola Corporation and ITD Industries have launched Ontario’s first commercial hydrogen refueling station, marking a significant milestone towards decarbonizing Canada’s heavy-duty transportation sector. The station, located at ITD Industries’ headquarters in Etobicoke, ON, aims to support long-range hydrogen fuel cell vehicles, such as Nikola’s Class 8 truck.
Key Highlights:
- First commercial hydrogen refueling station in Ontario for heavy-duty transportation.
- Located at ITD Industries’ headquarters in Etobicoke, ON.
- 700-bar pressure-fill system for efficient hydrogen dispensing.
- Collaboration with Canadian Hydrogen Association and major retailers like Walmart Canada.
- Significant support from provincial and federal dignitaries, including Premier Doug Ford.
- Incentives available through iMHZEV Program and Clean BC Go Electric Rebates.
The station features a 700-bar pressure-fill system, designed to efficiently dispense hydrogen fuel into long-range vehicles like Nikola’s hydrogen fuel cell electric Class 8 truck. “It is inspiring to witness the vision of a hydrogen-powered future coming to life with the opening of this refueling station in the greater Toronto area,” said Nikola CEO Steve Girsky.
Nikola and ITD Industries are at the forefront of transforming Ontario’s commercial transportation sector towards a carbon-free future. The collaboration includes partners like the Canadian Hydrogen Association and major retailers such as Walmart Canada, which has incorporated a Nikola hydrogen fuel cell electric truck into its fleet.
Philip Turi, COO of ITD Industries, emphasized the strategic importance of the station, stating, “This station is the first of several ITD is planning on erecting across Ontario with Nikola Corporation as we aim to build a hydrogen fueling corridor connecting Windsor to Montreal.”
Premier Doug Ford acknowledged the milestone, saying, “This milestone marks a significant step as we work together with businesses, industry, and all levels of government to build reliable, affordable, and clean energy solutions to power our province’s growth.”
Nikola’s expansion in Canada is further supported by the Incentives for Medium- and Heavy-Duty Zero-Emission Vehicles (iMHZEV) Program, offering up to $200,000 (CAD) in incentives for hydrogen fuel cell electric trucks and $150,000 (CAD) for battery-electric trucks. Additionally, the Clean BC Go Electric Rebates in British Columbia provide $150,000 (CAD) in incentives for both types of trucks, stackable with federal incentives.
Earlier this year, Alberta’s first commercial hydrogen refueling station was unveiled, marking the beginning of an expanded hydrogen refueling network across Western Canada, playing a crucial role in decarbonizing the region’s busiest highways.
