The New York Power Authority (NYPA) has successfully deployed a new power boosting technology developed in partnership with ZOOZ Power, aimed at enabling ultra-fast electric vehicle (EV) charging in grid-constrained locations. This project, part of the 2022 New York-Israel Smart Energy Innovation Challenge, was announced during Climate Week NYC. The deployment is a crucial step forward in overcoming the limitations of current power grids, paving the way for rapid expansion of high-speed EV charging across New York State.
Key Highlights
- ZOOZ Power’s flywheel technology helps deliver ultra-fast EV charging in areas with limited grid capacity.
- The solution incorporates kinetic energy storage to supplement grid power.
- Collaboration with NYPA aims to support the state’s clean energy goals and expand EV infrastructure.
- Project announced during Climate Week NYC, underscoring its role in advancing sustainable energy.
ZOOZ Power’s unique kinetic power booster technology offers supplemental power to EV fast chargers, enabling ultra-fast charging even in areas constrained by limited grid capacity. The power booster stores electricity in the form of kinetic energy and utilizes energy management capabilities to ensure sustainable and efficient charging. The new ultra-fast EV charging system, featuring the ZOOZ power booster, was installed at a NYPA fleet charging station in Marcy, Oneida County.
NYPA President and CEO Justin E. Driscoll expressed the importance of this innovation, stating, “Partnerships like the one with ZOOZ are integral to our work to decarbonize our economy and support transportation electrification in New York State.” The power booster developed through the collaboration represents a breakthrough in expanding the accessibility of high-speed charging infrastructure in areas where the grid is limited.
ZOOZ Power CEO Erez Zimerman highlighted the significance of their flywheel technology, known as ZOOZTER-100, which incorporates an Energy Management System (EMS) to efficiently manage power and allow the installation of multi-port, ultra-fast charging stations. “Our collaboration with NYPA will grant us access to advanced power technologies and enable us to inform additional NYPA and other potential customers about this innovative technology,” Zimerman added.
The 2022 New York-Israel Smart Energy Innovation Challenge was launched to foster collaboration between New York and Israeli innovators, driving advancements in clean energy technologies. ZOOZ Power was awarded $1 million and the opportunity to partner with NYPA to address the challenges related to grid capacity and high-speed EV charging.
New York-Israel Clean Energy Collaboration
NYPA’s collaboration with Israeli firms has been pivotal in promoting clean energy innovations. Previously, Prisma Photonics was chosen to work on a real-time transmission line issue detection system. NYPA also collaborates with companies such as mPrest, Brenmiller Energy, and SIGA OT to enhance grid security, energy efficiency, and safety.
The joint efforts between NYPA and Israeli partners demonstrate New York’s dedication to becoming a leader in clean energy and providing the infrastructure needed for the electrification of transportation. Through programs like the New York-Israel Smart Energy Challenge, NYPA continues to support technological innovations to achieve ambitious climate goals.
