Polestar has announced a recall for certain 2025 Polestar 3 vehicles due to a safety issue with the rearview camera. In some cases, the camera fails to display an image when the vehicle is shifted into reverse, potentially increasing the risk of a crash by limiting the driver’s view of what’s behind them.
Key Highlights:
- Affected Vehicles: 2025 Polestar 3 models
- Issue: Rearview camera image may not display when in reverse
- Safety Risk: Increased risk of a crash due to reduced visibility
- Remedy: Software update, available at dealers or over-the-air
- Owner Notification: Letters mailed starting July 1, 2025
This recall involves approximately 3,664 vehicles. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reports that a software glitch is to blame. When the gear selector is placed in reverse, the rearview camera image should appear by default, as required by Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 111 for rear visibility. However, in affected Polestar 3 vehicles, this doesn’t always happen. Specifically, if the vehicle hasn’t gone faster than 10 mph since the last time it was in reverse, the center display shows a 3D/360 view instead of the rearview image. This could confuse drivers and make it harder to spot obstacles or people behind the car.
Polestar is addressing the problem with a free software update. Owners can have it installed at an authorized dealer or opt for an over-the-air (OTA) update, which means the fix can be applied remotely without a trip to the service center. Notification letters with instructions will be mailed to owners starting July 1, 2025. Until then, owners can reach out to Polestar customer service at 1-800-806-2504 and reference recall number RP1057 for more details.
For additional information or to verify if a vehicle is affected, owners can visit www.nhtsa.gov or call the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 888-327-4236. Polestar urges all affected owners to update their vehicles as soon as possible to ensure safety.
