Polestar Automotive USA, Inc. has issued a safety recall for approximately 27,816 Polestar 2 vehicles due to a defect with the rearview camera system. The recall affects all model year 2021-2025 Polestar 2 electric vehicles produced for the U.S. market.
Key Highlights
- Affected Vehicles: The recall includes all 2021-2025 Polestar 2 vehicles.
- Number of Units: A total of 27,816 vehicles are potentially involved in the recall.
- The Defect: A software issue may cause the rearview camera display to fail when the vehicle is in reverse.
- Safety Risk: The failure of the camera image to display reduces the driver’s rear visibility, increasing the risk of a crash during a backing event.
- The Remedy: Polestar will provide a new software update free of charge to correct the issue.
- Owner Notification: Interim owner notification letters are scheduled to be mailed on November 7, 2025.
Defect Details
According to the report filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), a software defect is the root cause of the issue. When the driver places the vehicle in reverse, the center console display may show a message stating, “Camera is temporarily unavailable,” instead of the live rearview image. The recall population includes every Polestar 2 manufactured from the start of production on July 9, 2020, to the end of production on November 22, 2024. The component supplier is identified as Volvo Car Corporation of Sweden.
Safety Risk and Recall History
The absence of a rearview image reduces the driver’s field of view behind the vehicle, which elevates the risk of a collision while reversing.
This action follows previous attempts to fix the camera issue. Polestar had issued earlier recalls (NHTSA recalls 24V477 and 25V280), but investigations determined that the remedies were insufficient to solve the problem. After continued discussions with NHTSA and analysis of the issue, Polestar decided to conduct a new voluntary safety recall on September 11, 2025.
Remedy and Schedule
Polestar is developing a final software solution to permanently correct the camera defect. The remedy will be a new software update provided to owners at no cost. The company anticipates the final software will be ready for release by the end of the first quarter or the beginning of the second quarter of 2026.
Vehicle owners will receive an interim notification letter on November 7, 2025, informing them of the safety risk. A second letter will be sent once the final remedy is available.
Owners who have previously paid for repairs related to this issue may be eligible for reimbursement. For more information, owners can contact Polestar customer service at 1-800-806-2504 and reference recall number RP1069.
