- The vehicle’s design is styled by Mercedes-Benz and will be built on a new proprietary architecture developed by smart.

- The world premiere of the new model is scheduled for late 2026.

Reinventing an Urban Icon
Nearly three decades after the original smart fortwo revolutionized urban travel, the brand is poised to do it again. The decision to proceed with the smart #2 comes after the successful completion of an internal feasibility check known as “project: two.” The new model aims to build upon the legacy of its predecessor, which was loved by over two million customers worldwide for its innovative approach to city driving.
Mr. Tong Xiangbei, Global CEO of smart, noted that developing an ultra-compact vehicle on an entirely new all-electric architecture is a complex undertaking. He highlighted the company’s strengthened production and development capabilities and renewed brand lineup as key factors making this the perfect moment to reinvent the iconic city car. According to Ms. Mandy Zhang, Global CMO of smart, the new smart #2 will respond to market enthusiasm by blending cutting-edge technology and the brand’s latest design philosophy into the celebrated two-seater concept, heralding the rebirth of the smart two-seater.
Advanced Design and Development
The upcoming smart #2 will be a product of collaborative excellence. The exterior and interior styling will be led by Mercedes-Benz Design, ensuring a premium and aesthetically pleasing vehicle. Underneath, the car will be built on an all-new proprietary architecture specifically developed for ultra-compact vehicles by smart’s in-house research and development team.
This dedicated platform will allow the integration of new technology solutions for its segment, promising a modern and connected driving experience. The vehicle is currently in its final design and development phase, with production slated to take place in China. The global launch strategy includes key markets such as China and Europe, along with other selected regions.
Expanding the smart Portfolio
The introduction of the smart #2 is a strategic expansion of the brand’s growing vehicle lineup. It will join the smart #1, #3, and the upcoming #5, demonstrating the company’s commitment to meeting diverse customer needs. By offering everything from agile city cars to premium mid-range SUVs, smart aims to cover all key requirements of modern mobility.
This development aligns with the brand’s “China-Europe, Dual Home” global development strategy. Since establishing a global joint venture between Mercedes-Benz AG and Zhejiang Geely Holding Group in late 2019, smart has successfully transformed into a leading premium intelligent electric automotive brand. With a footprint now spanning around 40 countries and regions, the company continues to focus on boosting its global business operations.
