Nyobolt has introduced a revolutionary EV prototype, developed with CALLUM, showcasing ultra-fast charging technology that moves from lab testing to real-world applications. Nyobolt’s batteries can charge from 10 to 80 percent in under five minutes, significantly outpacing current EV charging speeds without the usual battery degradation. Independent tests confirm Nyobolt batteries can last over 600,000 miles with minimal capacity loss, positioning Nyobolt as a leader in sustainable and efficient EV battery technology.
Key Highlights:
- Ultra-Fast Charging: Nyobolt’s EV can charge from 10 to 80 percent in just under five minutes using a 350kW DC charger.
- Sustainable Performance: The batteries maintain over 80 percent capacity after 4,000 fast charge cycles, equivalent to 600,000 miles.
- OEM Collaborations: Nyobolt is in discussions with eight OEMs for integrating its technology into high-performance EVs.
- Scalable Production: Nyobolt plans to ramp up battery production, capable of manufacturing up to two million cells per year.
Advanced Battery Technology
Founded in 2019, Cambridge-based Nyobolt utilizes next-generation patented carbon and metal oxide anode materials, innovative cell design, and integrated power electronics to create high-power battery systems. These batteries cater to various applications, including heavy-duty trucks, robotics, and consumer devices requiring quick recharge cycles.
Initial tests show that Nyobolt EV’s 50Ah 35kWh battery charges from 10 to 80 percent in four minutes and 37 seconds, offering a range of 155 WLTP miles. The first four minutes provide 120 miles of range, doubling the speed of current fast-charging vehicles.
Durable and Efficient
Nyobolt’s technology addresses the degradation issues of typical lithium-ion batteries. Nyobolt’s cells complete over 4,000 full Depth of Discharge cycles while retaining significant capacity. Independent testing corroborates these findings, with cells achieving over 4,400 cycles and only a 50 percent rise in internal resistance, much lower than industry norms.
Dr. Sai Shivareddy, Nyobolt’s co-founder and CEO, emphasizes that their low impedance cells offer extended battery life and sustainability, crucial for long-term EV adoption.
Lightweight and High-Performance
The Nyobolt EV prototype is a sports car weighing just 1,250kg, demonstrating that Nyobolt can enable lighter and better-handling EVs. This compact battery pack allows for energy-efficient vehicles that are cost-effective and resource-efficient. Shane Davies, Nyobolt’s director of vehicle battery systems, highlights that their technology supports creating excitement in the EV segment by reducing charging downtime and making electrification more accessible.
Future Prospects
Nyobolt’s immediate goal is to showcase and test its battery technology, with low-volume production feasible within a year and plans for larger-scale manufacturing by 2025. The flexible manufacturing model allows for substantial production capacity, and Nyobolt’s batteries will comply with the EU’s Battery Regulation requirements.
Additionally, Nyobolt’s EV architecture can be retrofitted to existing platforms, significantly reducing charge times and enhancing battery life. The innovative cooling system ensures minimal heat generation, even during fast charging or high-performance driving.
Nyobolt’s battery technology, developed by University of Cambridge scientists, leverages low impedance cells and advanced anode materials for ultra-fast charging without compromising battery life.
Expanding Applications
Nyobolt is already engaging with eight vehicle OEMs and plans to deploy its technology in robotics and heavy-duty commercial vehicles. Dr. Shivareddy concludes that their novel battery technology is ready and scalable, poised to revolutionize industries with previously unattainable electrification possibilities.
Nyobolt aims to unlock new potential in battery performance, offering ultra-fast charging and high-power battery solutions that are safer, more efficient, and immediately manufacturable.
