Volkswagen Group has started series production of the ID. UNYX 08 at its Hefei, China facility. The all-electric full-size SUV is the first model developed jointly with Chinese EV maker XPENG. The vehicle reached production readiness in 24 months. A market launch is planned for the first half of 2026.
Highlights
- The ID. UNYX 08 features 800-volt ultra-fast charging, L2 ADAS capabilities, and over-the-air update support.
- Volkswagen and XPENG jointly developed the vehicle under a partnership established in 2023.
- Volkswagen Group plans to launch more than 20 new NEV models in China in 2026, with 50 targeted by 2030.
- The partnership also produced a new zonal electrical architecture, the China Electronic Architecture (CEA), for future Volkswagen models.

Joint Development With XPENG
The ID. UNYX 08 is the first product from Volkswagen’s long-term partnership with XPENG. The collaboration focuses on product development and technological innovation. A second jointly developed Volkswagen model is expected to debut and reach the market later this year.
Volkswagen Group CEO Oliver Blume said: “Three years ago, we launched our strong China strategy – and it is now coming into its own. The ID. UNYX 08 is the next impressive proof of this. The car was developed in China for China. With German engineering and local cutting-edge technology. Brought to market at high speed – and at attractive prices.”
XPENG Chairman and CEO He Xiaopeng said: “With the ID. UNYX 08 entering series production, our cooperation with Volkswagen Group has delivered a tangible result. Built on mutual trust and close collaboration, this partnership allows both sides to combine our strengths and create long-term value.”
Technical Platform and Architecture
The ID. UNYX 08 is Volkswagen’s first fully connected all-electric full-size SUV. Key technical features include:
- 800-volt charging architecture for ultra-fast charging capability
- L2 ADAS with advanced driver assistance functions
- Over-the-air updates enabling continuous software improvements
Volkswagen Group’s China Technology Company (VCTC) led the development process. VCTC defined product design, technical validation, quality standards, and driving dynamics tuning. The company worked alongside CARIAD China and XPENG to build the China Electronic Architecture (CEA). This new zonal electrical and electronic architecture will underpin future Volkswagen models in China. It will support both NEVs and fuel-powered vehicles.

China NEV Product Offensive
Ralf Brandstätter, Volkswagen Group Board Member for China, said: “On average, the Volkswagen Group is launching one new electric car every two weeks this year. That’s ‘China Speed.’ The ID. UNYX 08 is the first Volkswagen model in a new generation of smart electric vehicles that will carry our strengths into the electric age.”
The ID. UNYX 08 marks the start of Volkswagen’s largest EV product offensive in China. The Group plans to launch more than 20 new NEV models in 2026. By 2030, the company aims to introduce 50 new NEV models to the Chinese market. Volkswagen delivered approximately 2.93 million vehicles in China in 2024. The company remains the largest international automaker in the country.
