Volkswagen ID.4 and ID.5 Gain Bigger Batteries, V2L

Volkswagen updates the ID.4 and ID.5 with bigger batteries, V2L capability, physical steering wheel buttons, and improved safety features, with UK pricing from £36,995.

Volkswagen has introduced a round of updates to the ID.4 and ID.5 electric SUVs, headlined by enhanced battery options and new vehicle-to-load (V2L) capability across both model ranges.

Select trims now feature batteries with greater net capacity, higher power output, and longer range. The ID.4 Pro 4MOTION variants, for instance, now deliver 299 PS and up to 341 miles of WLTP combined range. GTX versions of both models carry a slightly smaller net battery but maintain the same power levels while gaining marginal range improvements through efficiency gains. Volkswagen said the specification upgrades come with little or no price increase.

Highlights

  • Larger batteries on select trims deliver up to 341 miles WLTP combined range on the ID.4 Pro 4MOTION, with 299 PS output
  • Vehicle-to-load (V2L) and bi-directional charging are now available, turning the charge port into an external power source via optional adapters
  • Interior and safety upgrades include physical steering wheel buttons, enhanced Traffic Assist with Front Cross, and faster 15-watt wireless phone charging
  • Pricing starts at £36,995 (approximately $49,573 USD), though eligibility for the UK’s Electric Car Grant is pending reconfirmation

Vehicle-to-Load and Bi-Directional Charging

V2L capability allows owners to draw electricity from the vehicle’s battery through the charge port. Two optional adapters enable the feature, which Volkswagen positioned for use cases such as camping or powering tools on-site. Bi-directional charging support is also part of the update.

Cabin, Safety, and Efficiency Improvements

All ID.4 and ID.5 trims receive physical buttons on the steering wheel, replacing the touch-sensitive controls from prior model years. The Traffic Assist system now includes Front Cross functionality designed to detect pedestrians and cyclists.

Additional changes include an improved infotainment system, driver attention monitoring, and inductive phone charging upgraded from 5 watts to 15 watts. A more efficient heat pump is available as an option.

For the ID.4 Pro 4MOTION specifically, the braked trailer load limit increases from 1,200 kg (2,646 lbs) to 1,800 kg (3,968 lbs) at a 12 percent grade.

Trim-Level Changes

Entry-level Pure Essential trims for both models now come with larger 19-inch steel wheels. Pure Match trims gain a standard electric tailgate. An optional 230-volt power socket is also available across both ranges.

Model Background and Pricing

The ID.4 launched in 2021 as Volkswagen’s first fully electric SUV and first global EV. It won the 2021 World Car of the Year award. Eight trim levels are currently offered in the UK market. The ID.5, launched in the UK in early 2022, was the brand’s first electric SUV-coupé. Five trim levels are available.

Pricing for both models starts at £36,995 on-the-road (approximately $49,573 USD at the current exchange rate of £1 = $1.34). However, Volkswagen UK noted it must reapply for the models to qualify for the government’s Electric Car Grant following the specification changes. Eligibility has not yet been confirmed.
