Mercedes-Benz USA has initiated a safety recall for specific EQB electric vehicles due to concerns regarding high-voltage battery stability. The manufacturer identified a risk where an internal short circuit in the battery cells could potentially lead to a fire. This action affects 169 vehicles that may have received incorrect software during a previous recall effort.
Highlights
- Impacted Models: Certain 2022-2023 EQB 250, 300 4MATIC, and 350 4MATIC models are included.
- Root Cause: Production variations at the battery supplier combined with external factors can cause cell instability.
- Interim Safety: Owners are instructed to limit battery charging to a maximum of 80% until repairs are completed.
- Remedy Plan: Dealers will perform a free Battery Management System (BMS) software update to resolve the issue.
Technical Root Cause and Risks
The defect originates from variations during early-stage production at the supplier, Farasis Energy (Ganzhou) Co. Ltd. When these batteries are at a high state of charge, they may become insufficiently robust against external factors. These factors include mechanical damage or electric current ripples within the charging infrastructure.
If a thermal incident occurs while driving, the vehicleβs instrument cluster will display a high-voltage battery warning. However, if an incident occurs while the vehicle is parked, the driver will receive no advance warning. Mercedes-Benz confirmed that 100% of the recalled population is estimated to have the defect.
Recall Chronology and Scope
This recall, designated as NHTSA number 25V894, is an extension of an earlier campaign, 25V050. In late 2025, Mercedes-Benz AG found that a documentation discrepancy led to some vehicles not receiving the correct software update. Although those initial updates appeared successful, the vehicles remain at risk until the new software is installed.
The involved vehicle population consists of:
- EQB 350 4MATIC: 21 units produced between Dec 13, 2021, and Jan 23, 2024.
- EQB 300 4MATIC: 100 units produced between Dec 13, 2021, and Jan 23, 2024.
- EQB 250: 48 units produced between Dec 13, 2021, and Jan 23, 2024.
Remedy and Notification Schedule
To mitigate the risk, authorized Mercedes-Benz dealers will update the BMS software using part number A2439027408. This new software variant ensures the high-voltage battery remains stable even at high states of charge. Vehicles produced after July 31, 2024, are not affected due to improved supplier production processes.
The notification schedule is as follows:
- Dealer Notification: Scheduled for December 23, 2025.
- VIN Searchability: VINs will be searchable on the NHTSA website starting December 23, 2025.
- Owner Notification: Letters will be mailed to affected owners by January 16, 2026.
