Mercedes-Benz has unveiled the 2027 CLA hybrid, introducing a new electrified drivetrain architecture designed to bridge the gap between internal combustion and full electrification. The model features a newly developed 1.5-liter turbocharged engine paired with a 48-volt hybrid system, aimed at increasing efficiency without sacrificing performance. Beyond the powertrain, the vehicle integrates the proprietary Mercedes-Benz Operating System (MB.OS), leveraging artificial intelligence for enhanced vehicle management and user interaction.
Highlights
- New Powertrain: Features a 1.5L turbocharged Miller cycle engine and an 8-speed electrified dual-clutch transmission.
- System Output: Delivers a combined 208 hp and 280 lb-ft of torque, achieving 0-60 mph in 7.1 seconds.
- Electric Capability: Supports electric driving at low speeds, “gliding” up to 60 mph, and energy recuperation up to 25 kW.
- Advanced Software: Debut of MB.OS with AI integration from Google and Microsoft, supporting over-the-air updates.

Hybrid Propulsion System
The core of the CLA hybrid is the new M 252 1.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine. Developed by Mercedes-Benz, this unit utilizes the Miller combustion cycle to optimize fuel efficiency, particularly during partial-load operations. The engine design includes a compact charge-air path and an exhaust system mounted close to the engine to meet future emission standards.
Complementing the combustion engine is a new 8-speed dual-clutch transmission (8F-eDCT) with an integrated electric motor. This compact design houses the electric motor and inverter directly within the transmission housing. A lightweight 48-volt lithium-ion battery with 1.3 kWh of usable capacity supplies energy to the system.
Technical Specifications:
- Engine Output: 188 hp at 5,500 rpm.
- Engine Torque: 221 lb-ft at 2,000-3,500 rpm.
- Electric Motor Output: 30 hp (approx. 22 kW).
- Electric Motor Torque: 148 lb-ft.
- Combined System Output: 208 hp and 280 lb-ft.
- Top Speed: 130 mph (electronically limited).
Efficiency and Recuperation
The hybrid architecture enables distinct operational modes designed to reduce fuel consumption. In urban environments requiring less than 27 hp, the vehicle can operate solely on electric power. At speeds up to 60 mph, the CLA hybrid allows for “electric gliding,” where the drivetrain decouples to permit coasting with the engine off.
The system also features robust energy recovery capabilities. Recuperation of up to 25 kW is available across all eight gears. Additionally, the electric motor manages engine starting duties, eliminating the need for a traditional pinion starter and enabling imperceptible transitions between drive modes. An electric air conditioning compressor allows climate control operation even when the combustion engine is inactive.

MB.OS and Digital Infrastructure
The 2027 CLA incorporates the Mercedes-Benz Operating System (MB.OS), which connects the vehicle to the Mercedes-Benz Intelligent Cloud. This architecture supports over-the-air (OTA) updates for vehicle software and ADAS systems, ensuring long-term functionality improvements.
The fourth-generation MBUX infotainment system integrates AI technologies from Microsoft and Google. This system utilizes a multi-agent approach to handle complex, multi-turn conversational queries. Navigation is powered by Google Maps and integrates Google Cloud’s Automotive AI Agent for enhanced route guidance and contextual information.
Driver Assistance and Interior Design
Standard equipment includes the MB.DRIVE suite of advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS). The package features Distance Assist DISTRONIC, Blind Spot Assist Plus with Exit Warning, and Lane Keeping Assist. Optional upgrades include Steering Assist and Lane Change Assist, which automates lane changes via the indicator stalk.
Inside, the cabin offers an optional MBUX Superscreen that spans the dashboard width, comprising a 10.25-inch driver display, a 14-inch central display, and a 14-inch passenger display. The displays run on high-performance chips using the Unity Game Engine for real-time graphics. Based on customer feedback, the multifunction steering wheel returns to physical controls, featuring a rocker switch for cruise control and a roller for volume adjustment.
