Altilium, a UK-based clean technology company, has launched Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) battery recycling operations to support sustainability in the electric vehicle (EV) industry. The initiative focuses on recovering critical materials from LFP batteries used by a leading global OEM. Through its proprietary EcoCathode™ technology, Altilium can extract over 97% of lithium and 99% of graphite from LFP batteries, helping automakers meet new regulatory and sustainability goals. This move positions Altilium as a key player in the development of a circular battery economy in the UK.

Key Highlights:

  • Altilium’s new LFP battery recycling operation aims to build a sustainable UK supply chain for EV batteries.
  • The company’s EcoCathode™ technology efficiently recovers lithium and graphite, making LFP recycling commercially viable.
  • LFP battery usage is projected to grow from 18% of the UK EV market in 2027 to 25% by 2035.
  • LFP batteries pose a recycling challenge as they lack high-value materials like nickel and cobalt, making lithium and graphite recovery crucial.
  • Altilium’s Plymouth ACT2 plant currently processes up to 300kg of black mass waste per day, equivalent to one EV battery.
  • The planned Teesside facility will be one of Europe’s largest EV battery recycling plants, capable of handling scrap from 150,000 EVs per year.

Dr. Christian Marston, Altilium’s COO, emphasized the significance of this development, stating, “The rise of LFP batteries presents both challenges and opportunities for recyclers. At Altilium, we are pioneering solutions to ensure these batteries are not only recovered, but play a key role in a UK circular battery economy.”

Altilium continues to expand its capabilities, already recycling Nickel Manganese Cobalt (NMC) batteries for UK automotive OEMs. The company’s efforts contribute to reducing reliance on virgin materials, strengthening the UK’s EV battery supply chain, and supporting a sustainable transport future.
