Audi FAW NEV Company, a joint venture between Audi and FAW, has begun producing fully electric models at its new, state-of-the-art facility in Changchun, China. The first models to roll off the line utilize the Premium Platform Electric (PPE) architecture, starting with the Q6L e-tron family, followed by a China-specific variant of the Audi A6 e-tron. This development represents an important milestone, as it strengthens Audi’s position in one of the world’s most significant automotive markets and accelerates its commitment to electrification.
- High-tech construction: Digital twinning and advanced automation enhance efficiency, flexibility, and quality control.
- Integrated IT systems: A fully networked production environment, supported by a single IT architecture using SAP S/4HANA, enables intelligent and efficient processes.
- Sustainability focus: The facility relies on green energy, incorporates closed-loop waste management, and targets net carbon-neutral operations by 2025.
- Local supply chain: A high degree of localization, with around 50 percent of suppliers located within 30 kilometers, supports the “in China, for China” strategy and reduces logistical complexity.
- Future ecosystem: A supplier park developed by local authorities encourages growth of the local industrial ecosystem and supports Audi’s expanding product portfolio.

Audi’s strategic approach in China includes the PPE platform, which sets new standards in performance, range, charging, and driving dynamics. According to Gernot Döllner, CEO of AUDI AG: “The models produced here will play a crucial role in our local portfolio and strengthen our position in this key market.”
The facility was constructed using Building Information Modeling (BIM), enabling continuous real-time updates and seamless collaboration between German and Chinese teams. Helmut Stettner, CEO of Audi FAW NEV Company, highlights that “Technology helps amplify the synergies between the teams from Germany and China. It also enables us to be fast and highly efficient and speed up processes.”
More than 800 robots contribute to automation in the body shop, while visual recognition technology ensures consistent quality. The plant also features driverless transportation systems, automated warehousing, and explores the use of humanoid robotics to advance production methods.
In alignment with Audi’s “Mission:Zero” program, the plant relies solely on green energy and adopts innovative solutions to treat wastewater, recycle production waste, and protect biodiversity. Solar panels, an aluminum closed loop in the press shop, and an eco-friendly paint shop further underscore the brand’s commitment to sustainability.
By fostering the growth of a robust local ecosystem, including a training system for talent and an upgraded supply chain, Audi FAW NEV Company supports Audi’s global electrification strategy. As Audi expands its local portfolio, tailored vehicles and advanced technologies continue to play a central role in meeting the specific demands of the Chinese market. Through these efforts, Audi’s presence in China not only scales up production of electric models but also reinforces its long-term vision of sustainable, customer-centric mobility solutions.
