Mercedes-Benz has completed rigorous winter testing of its upcoming multipurpose vehicles (MPVs) near the Arctic Circle, evaluating vehicle dynamics, thermal management, and interior comfort under extreme conditions.

Key Highlights:

  • New MPVs feature advanced 4MATIC all-wheel drive and rear-axle steering, ensuring superior handling and maneuverability.
  • Vehicles endured temperatures as low as -22°F during comprehensive testing in Arjeplog, Sweden.
  • Future models will be built on the new modular Mercedes-Benz Van Architecture, with electric variants launching under the Van Electric Architecture (VAN.EA) from 2026.
  • Mercedes-Benz used digital tools and real-time analytics from its Mission Control Center to streamline testing and enhance vehicle performance efficiently.

Testing near the Arctic Circle provides critical data on vehicle performance, specifically under low-grip conditions like snow and ice-covered roads, where traction is significantly reduced. Mercedes-Benz engineers specifically monitored acceleration, braking response, and stability, which are crucial for safe driving in winter climates.

Dr. Andreas Zygan, Head of Development at Mercedes-Benz Vans, stated, “Our future MPVs herald a new era. To achieve our ambitious development goals, we are taking advantage of all the opportunities offered by digitalization. Thanks to our Mission Control Center, we were able to optimize the data from the trips in real time. This has allowed us to significantly shorten our test time frame and make significant progress in terms of product maturity in a very efficient way.”

Thermal management was another key priority, ensuring passenger comfort and reliable system performance even under extreme cold. Vehicles underwent pre-conditioning in special cold chambers to guarantee all systems function properly at low temperatures. Additionally, battery charging behavior and charging management were thoroughly tested, with vehicles equipped with the latest 800-volt charging system and 22-kW AC chargers.

Mercedes-Benz emphasizes that these new MPVs will deliver exceptional versatility, from luxurious VIP transport and high-end limousine services to spacious, comfortable family vehicles. The combination of advanced technology, sophisticated driving dynamics, and luxurious comfort positions Mercedes-Benz to set new standards in the premium MPV segment.
