BMW iX3 Wins World Car of the Year

The BMW iX3 won both 2026 World Car of the Year and World Electric Vehicle at the New York Auto Show, marking BMW's 11th World Car Award.

The BMW iX3 claimed a double victory at the 2026 World Car Awards, taking home both World Car of the Year and World Electric Vehicle honors. The all-electric SUV, the first production model built on BMW’s Neue Klasse platform, was announced as the winner at the New York International Auto Show on April 1, 2026. A jury of 98 automotive journalists from 33 countries selected the iX3 from a field of 58 initial contenders, with results tabulated by KPMG.

Highlights

  • The BMW iX3 won both the 2026 World Car of the Year and World Electric Vehicle awards at the New York International Auto Show.
  • The Neue Klasse-based EV beat the Hyundai Palisade and Nissan Leaf for the overall title, and edged out the Mercedes-Benz CLA and Nissan Leaf in the electric category.
  • BMW has now collected 11 World Car Awards over the program’s 22-year history.
  • The iX3 offers up to 805 km (WLTP) of range, 400 kW DC fast charging, and energy consumption as low as 15.1 kWh/100 km.

First Neue Klasse Model Sets the Pace

The iX3 is BMW’s inaugural Neue Klasse production vehicle. It debuted at IAA Mobility 2025 and has already secured approximately 50,000 orders. The electric SUV features BMW’s sixth-generation eDrive technology with 800-volt architecture, a 108.7 kWh usable battery, and the ability to add up to 372 km of range in just 10 minutes at a DC fast charger.

The iX3 50 xDrive variant produces 345 kW (469 hp) and 645 Nm of torque. It accelerates from 0–100 km/h in 4.9 seconds and reaches a top speed of 210 km/h.

Interior Tech: Panoramic iDrive Debut

BMW’s Panoramic iDrive system also makes its first appearance in the iX3. The interface, powered by BMW Operating System X, integrates a panoramic vision display across the windshield, a 17.9-inch central touchscreen, and an optional 3D head-up display. Four high-performance computing units deliver up to 20 times the processing power of prior BMW architectures.

World Car Awards Double Is a Rarity

The dual win marks only the second time BMW has taken the World Car of the Year title. The BMW 3 Series (E90) won the award in 2006. BMW has also earned two prior World Green Car titles — for the 118d in 2008 and the i3 in 2014.

Additionally, BMW Group CEO Oliver Zipse was named 2026 World Car Person of the Year in February, recognized for steering the company through its electrification and Neue Klasse transformation.

“We are delighted by this outstanding result for the BMW iX3, the first production model of the Neue Klasse. The iX3 marks the beginning of a new era for BMW in terms of design language, range and charging performance, driver assistance systems, and the user experience with the first-ever BMW Panoramic iDrive. Above all, the iX3 stands for the next generation of sheer driving pleasure, powered by the Heart of Joy. With 40 new or updated models coming in the next year, the innovations of the Neue Klasse will benefit our entire product portfolio,” said Mike Reichelt, Head of Neue Klasse.

Other 2026 World Car Winners

The awards ceremony also recognized winners across four additional categories. The Hyundai Ioniq 6 N took World Performance Car. Lucid Gravity won World Luxury Car. The NIO Firefly was named World Urban Car, and the Mazda 6e/EZ-6 received the World Car Design award.
