BMW Launches the 8th Generation 5 Series, Including its First Fully Electric Model

The sportier BMW i5 M60 xDrive sits at the top of the 5 Series range, boasting a 590 hp electric drivetrain that accelerates from 0-60 mph in a staggering 3.7 seconds.

The electric 5 Series includes a high-voltage battery, a product of the latest fifth-generation BMW eDrive technology. This advanced battery system provides a usable energy content of 84.3 kWh, allowing the i5 eDrive40 to travel up to 295 miles on a single charge, while the i5 M60 xDrive can reach 256 miles.

When it comes to charging, BMW has left no stone unturned. With the Combined Charging Unit, Level 2 AC charging up to 11 kW is available. For DC fast charging, a charging rate of 205 kW can replenish the battery from 10% to 80% in about 30 minutes. Moreover, first-time owners will receive two years of complimentary 30-minute charging sessions at Electrify America DC fast-charging locations.

Efficiency is also optimized with a novel combination of heat pump technology for the integrated heating and cooling circuit, the ‘My Mode EFFICIENT’ with new MAX RANGE function, and anticipatory thermal management for optimized DC fast charging.
