BMW Group’s Plant Munich is gearing up for the launch of the NEUE KLASSE in summer 2026, with three new production halls under construction for the body shop, assembly, and production logistics. Starting in 2027, the plant will exclusively produce fully electric vehicles using optimized production processes, targeted automation, and a new vehicle architecture to cut manufacturing costs. Pre-series production will kick off at the BMW Group Research and Innovation Centre (FIZ) pilot plant before year-end, while the company trains employees for e-mobility to support this shift.
Key Highlights:
- NEUE KLASSE launch in summer 2026: Three new production halls are being built at Plant Munich.
- Fully-electric vehicles by 2027: The plant will focus solely on electric models, boosting efficiency.
- Pre-series at FIZ pilot plant: Production starts this year to refine processes.
- Employee e-mobility training: Nearly 25,000 workers skilled up last year.

The NEUE KLASSE marks a new chapter for BMW Group, with a vehicle architecture built for efficiency and sustainability. At Plant Munich, the overhaul includes advanced technology in the new halls and virtual simulations for a smooth launch. “For the production start of the NEUE KLASSE, we will have a state-of-the-art plant in Munich that is characterised by flexibility, innovation and, above all, efficiency,” says Plant Director Peter Weber. This shift to electric-only production by 2027 will streamline operations by focusing on a single drive train, reducing parts and steps—like complex wiring harnesses.
The FIZ pilot plant plays a key role, testing production methods before they hit Munich’s main facility. “Alongside the pilot plant at the FIZ, we are also using virtual simulations to ensure a smooth ramp-up,” Weber notes. This pre-series phase ensures top quality for the NEUE KLASSE. Meanwhile, the BMW Group’s global production network stays flexible, capable of making different models and drive types on one line, adapting to market shifts.

Employee skills are a priority as e-mobility grows. Last year, nearly 25,000 employees completed e-mobility training, and Plant Munich is running electrician courses with the Chamber of Industry and Commerce (IHK). “Despite technical and structural innovations, our focus is always on people. We take pride in our employees’ expertise and experience, and their dedication to continuous improvement. It is thanks to their commitment that we are able to consistently deliver premium-quality vehicles,” Weber emphasizes. Since recent years, 5,500 jobs were added network-wide for electric drives, mostly filled internally.
The NEUE KLASSE launch ties into BMW Group’s push for sustainable mobility. Plant Munich’s upgrades show its commitment to innovation, efficiency, and a greener future, setting the stage to lead in electric vehicle production.
