General Motors (GM) has announced a safety recall for certain Cadillac Lyriq electric vehicles due to an issue where the driver’s video display may intermittently go blank. This defect could pose a significant safety risk by depriving the driver of crucial vehicle information. The recall, identified by NHTSA recall number 25V356 and GM’s recall number N252500680, affects over 40,000 vehicles.

Key Highlights:

  • Vehicles Affected: Certain 2023-2024 Cadillac Lyriq models.
  • Total Number of Units: Approximately 41,376 vehicles are potentially involved.
  • The Defect: The driver video display may intermittently go blank while the vehicle is in motion.
  • Safety Risk: A blank display means the loss of the instrument panel, rear-vision camera, and other federally regulated features, increasing the risk of a crash.
  • The Remedy: GM will provide a free software update for the video display control module.

The issue stems from the video display control module software in affected Cadillac Lyriq vehicles. General Motors initiated a product investigation on March 4, 2025, following an inquiry from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) on February 28, 2025, regarding customer complaints about driver video display malfunctions. GM’s review identified 1,209 unique VINS associated with potential field incidents between August 23, 2022, and April 3, 2025. Importantly, GM has stated it is not aware of any accidents or injuries related to this condition. The decision to conduct a safety recall was made by GM’s Safety Field Action Decision Authority on May 22, 2025.

The recall population includes 38,058 units of the 2024 Cadillac Lyriq manufactured between January 20, 2023, and September 20, 2024, and 3,318 units of the 2023 Cadillac Lyriq produced from March 1, 2022, to February 28, 2023. Vehicles equipped with the latest video display module software are not included in this recall. An estimated 3% of the recalled vehicles are expected to have the defect.

To rectify the problem, GM will update the video display control module software. For Lyriq owners whose vehicles are capable of receiving over-the-air (OTA) software updates and who have accepted the applicable terms, the update can be performed wirelessly without a dealership visit. Alternatively, all owners can schedule an appointment with a GM dealer to have the software update performed free of charge. GM has indicated that continuous improvements to the display control module software significantly reduce the likelihood of this malfunction.

Dealers were scheduled to be notified of the recall on May 29, 2025. Owners of the affected Cadillac Lyriq vehicles can expect to receive notification letters starting around July 14, 2025. Vehicle Identification Numbers (VINs) were expected to be searchable from May 29, 2025, allowing owners to check if their vehicle is included in the recall. As all affected vehicles are covered under warranty, a reimbursement program is not being offered.
