Daimler Truck North America LLC (DTNA) has delivered the state of New Mexico’s first Freightliner eCascadia electric trucks. The recipient, Goodwill Industries of New Mexico (GINM), is a nonprofit focused on skills training, job development, and social services.
This week, New Mexico Governor Michelle Grisham and GINM representatives unveiled the electric Class 8 tractors at a ribbon-cutting ceremony. These vehicles bring zero-emission transportation to GINM’s Albuquerque-based fleet.
“Delivering the first electric Freightliner eCascadias to Goodwill Industries of New Mexico marks a significant milestone in our efforts to promote sustainable transportation solutions across the nation and support organizations with strong community impact,” said David Carson, SVP sales and marketing at DTNA. “This partnership solidifies our commitment to driving innovation and environmental stewardship while enabling organizations like Goodwill to fulfill their mission of serving their local communities.”
GINM has championed sustainability by recycling, repairing, and reselling donated items for over a century. Adding battery-electric eCascadias further reduces their environmental footprint. The organization reports diverting over one hundred million pounds of material from New Mexico landfills annually.
To fund the purchase, GINM partnered with the New Mexico Environment Department (NMED), securing a grant through the Diesel Emissions Reduction Act (DERA). The grant covered 45% of the vehicles’ cost. Public Service Company of New Mexico (PNM) and Wagner Equipment collaborated to install transformers and a charging station.
“Environmental sustainability has long been part of the mission of our organization,” remarked Shauna Kastle, CEO and President of Goodwill Industries of New Mexico. “Our investment in electric semi-tractors underscores our commitment to our community and state to be environmentally responsible.”
In production since 2022, the Freightliner eCascadia now operates in more than 50 North American fleets, logging over 4 million electric miles. The eCascadia offers multiple battery and axle configurations for optimal fleet customization, with a typical range of 155-230 miles on a charge. Detroit’s ePowertrain powers the trucks, designed for efficiency and reliability. Recharging time is as quick as 90 minutes to reach 80% capacity. Safety is emphasized through the standard Detroit Assurance suite, including Active Brake Assist 5.
