Intelligent power management company Eaton has announced the launch of a new portfolio of fuses designed specifically for commercial electrified vehicles (EVs). Eaton’s Bussmann series fuses are capable of handling up to 1,400 amps and 900 volts, and can be customized to meet specific customer needs. These fuses will be showcased at Eaton’s booth during the ACT Expo in Las Vegas, Nevada, from May 20-23.

Key Highlights:

  • High Amp and Voltage Capability: Eaton’s Bussmann series fuses support up to 1,400 amps and 900 volts, addressing the higher power requirements of commercial EVs compared to passenger EVs.
  • Customization: Fuses can be tailored to customer specifications through design modifications or by paralleling multiple fuses.
  • Durability: These fuses are engineered to withstand harsh environments and vehicle vibrations, ensuring reliability in commercial applications.
  • In-House Testing: Eaton’s global testing capabilities allow comprehensive in-house testing, including environmental, thermal shock chamber, and vibration rig tests.

Technical Insight

Eaton leverages its extensive experience in the electrical and vehicle industries, spanning over a century, to innovate and deliver robust solutions for the growing electrified commercial vehicle market. Kimberley Wakelin, Eaton’s Engineering Manager for EV Protection, emphasized the importance of durability: “Electrified vehicles are propelled by electric motors, which are cyclic and need to perform in harsh environments. This means the fuses must be able to handle such conditions and the vehicle’s vibrations. Our innovative Bussmann series fuses solve that challenge, keeping up with harshness and vibration levels.”

Strategic Partnerships and Development

Eaton collaborates closely with global OEMs early in the vehicle development process to create custom fuse solutions. This partnership approach ensures that the fuses are tailored to meet the specific demands of electrified commercial vehicles. Once developed, Eaton conducts system simulations to verify the longevity and reliability of the fuse solutions.

Expansion and Future Growth

To support the increasing demand for their advanced fuse technology, Eaton has recently opened a new state-of-the-art assembly plant, enhancing their manufacturing capacity. This expansion reflects Eaton’s commitment to supporting the electrification and digitalization trends driving global growth.
