Eaton, in partnership with Munich Electrification, has introduced a new Battery Configuration Switch (BCS) designed to optimize charging for electric vehicles (EVs) with 400-volt/800-volt dual string battery packs. This innovative technology allows 800-volt vehicles to charge efficiently using 400-volt chargers, expanding charging accessibility and offering several advantages over traditional solutions.

Key Highlights:

  • Enhanced Charging Flexibility: Enables 800-volt EVs to charge at 400-volt charging stations.
  • Simplified System Design: Reduces up to 12 components in a battery disconnect unit.
  • Improved Efficiency: Minimizes contact resistance and eliminates hold current.
  • Increased Safety: Prevents pack short circuits and maintains stability during power loss.

“There are a lot of 800-volt vehicles in the market, but many charging stations can only supply 400-volt power. BCS provides charging flexibility to consumers who want access to an expanded network of DC chargers,” said Mark Schneider, president of Eaton’s eMobility.

Advantages of the BCS Technology:

The BCS offers significant benefits over conventional solutions:

  • Reduced Complexity: It simplifies the battery disconnect unit by eliminating up to 12 components, streamlining packaging and assembly.
  • Enhanced Efficiency: By minimizing contact points, the BCS reduces contact resistance, leading to improved system efficiency and performance.
  • Increased Safety: The BCS features a mechanical interlock that prevents short circuits caused by accidents, software glitches, or contactor malfunctions. It also ensures stability in case of electronic control unit power failure.
  • Bi-stable Operation: This eliminates the hold current required by traditional contactors, further enhancing efficiency and resilience against low voltage faults.

“We are thrilled to collaborate with Eaton in launching this groundbreaking new technology developed by our outstanding R&D team,” said Uwe Wiedeman, managing director of Munich Electrification. “Munich Electrification’s legacy of innovation in the EV battery industry combined with Eaton’s expertise in electrical switching and automotive manufacturing is helping us to solve our customers’ biggest challenges together.”

The BCS is designed for various applications, including automotive, light commercial vehicles, and utility terrain vehicles (UTVs). This technology reflects Eaton’s commitment to developing sustainable and innovative solutions for the evolving electric vehicle market.
