StoreDot, a leader in extreme fast charging (XFC) technology, has partnered with Kumyang, a top Korean battery manufacturer, to bring XFC cylindrical cells to mass production. This licensing agreement marks a significant step forward for electric vehicle (EV) battery innovation. It combines StoreDot’s cutting-edge XFC technology with Kumyang’s expertise in cylindrical cell manufacturing, focusing on the 4680 cell format. The collaboration promises to deliver EV batteries that charge from 10-80% in just 10 minutes, offering high energy density and long cycle life. This advancement aims to reduce charging times for EV drivers, supporting the global shift to electric mobility.
Key Highlights
- Rapid Charging: The XFC cylindrical cells can charge from 10-80% in 10 minutes, matching the performance of StoreDot’s prismatic and pouch cells.
- High Energy Density: These cells achieve a volumetric energy density of over 800 Wh/L, ideal for EVs and other industries.
- Longevity: Initial tests of the 4695 format show a cycle life exceeding 1,000 standard charge cycles.
- Mass Production Milestone: This is the first time XFC technology will be mass-produced in cylindrical cells, expanding options for EV manufacturers.
This partnership builds on a successful joint program where StoreDot and Kumyang optimized cell design at Kumyang’s facility. The result is a battery that balances high energy density with fast charging, addressing a major hurdle in EV adoption: charging anxiety. By integrating XFC into the widely used 4680 cylindrical format, the collaboration enables EV makers worldwide to offer vehicles with shorter charging times without sacrificing range. This is expected to appeal to consumers and accelerate the transition to sustainable transportation.
StoreDot’s CEO, Dr. Doron Myersdorf, emphasized the importance of this step: “This license agreement is an important milestone for StoreDot that will make our XFC technology available in the cylindrical format, in addition to the pouch and prismatic formats currently available.” Meanwhile, Kumyang’s CEO, Ryu Kwanghyun, highlighted the partnership’s impact: “This collaboration aligns perfectly with our commitment to delivering cutting-edge battery solutions that empower the widespread adoption of electric vehicles.”
StoreDot is known for its ambitious ‘100inX’ roadmap, aiming to charge 100 miles of range in 5 minutes by 2024, and further reduce that to 3 minutes by 2028. Kumyang brings its manufacturing prowess to the table, ensuring these innovations reach the market efficiently. Together, they are setting a new standard for EV batteries, making fast, reliable charging a reality for drivers everywhere. This development not only benefits the EV industry but also supports broader goals of reducing carbon emissions through advanced energy storage solutions.
