Electric Freight Partnership: Einride & Mars

Einride, a pioneer in freight mobility solutions, has announced a significant partnership with global conglomerate Mars, Incorporated. This collaboration marks a significant step in electrifying road freight within the Fast-Moving Consumer Goods (FMCG) industry in Europe. By 2030, this initiative aims to implement a fleet of 300 electric heavy-duty vehicles across Germany, the UK, and the Netherlands, significantly reducing carbon emissions.

The partnership anticipates a substantial environmental impact, estimating an annual reduction of 20,000 metric tons of CO2e by 2030. This figure represents a noteworthy 10% decrease in Mars Europe’s road transport greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions each year.

Robert Falck, CEO and Founder at Einride, expressed the initiative’s broader significance: “This sets a precedent for other players in the freight industry to follow, showcasing the mass potential of electrification at scale,” he stated. “We are honored to partner with Mars as their transformational partner as they look to meet their ambitious sustainability goals in a cost-effective way and set a new standard for creating a more resilient future.”

The initiative’s first phase has already commenced with the introduction of two electric trucks operating between Mars Petcare’s factory in Verden, Germany, and its distribution center in Minden. This route alone is expected to save approximately 193,000 road miles annually. Additionally, high power charging points have been installed at the German Petcare sites to support this transition.

The partnership’s expansion will see the deployment of electric routes in the UK and the Netherlands in 2024, followed by an autonomous pilot in 2025.

Barry Parkin, Chief Procurement and Sustainability Officer at Mars, Incorporated, highlighted the strategic importance of the partnership: “Partnering with Einride to deploy 300 electric heavy-duty trucks across Europe is a great example of how we collaborate and leverage our scale to drive action and real change today – providing long-term value and impact while setting the stage for a brighter and more sustainable tomorrow,” he commented.

Einride’s role in this partnership extends beyond vehicle supply. Their service, freight capacity-as-a-service, incorporates connected electric vehicles, autonomous vehicles, and Einride Smartchargers, all integrated through the Einride Saga operating system. This system enables optimized routes, reduced energy consumption, and minimized transportation costs.

Having operated electric fleets since 2020, Einride has positioned itself as a leader in sustainable freight solutions. Their clients, including prominent companies like Carlsberg and Maersk, have reported up to a 95% decrease in CO2e emissions while maintaining cost-effectiveness.
