Global youth increasingly favor electric vehicles (EVs), according to a survey by Economist Impact, sponsored by Nissan. Conducted across 15 cities with 3,750 respondents, the study highlights a projected 50% surge in EV ownership over the next decade, driven by sustainability concerns and emerging city demand. Young urbanites show strong awareness of electrification technologies, with many prioritizing eco-friendly mobility while balancing practical needs like cost and convenience.

Key Highlights:

  • 57% of respondents are willing to adjust travel habits to lower their carbon footprint.
  • EV ownership is expected to rise from 23% today to over 35% in 10 years.
  • Emerging cities lead enthusiasm, with 44% planning to drive EVs within five years.

Nissan’s collaboration with Economist Impact underscores a shift in mobility preferences among younger generations. The survey, targeting urban dwellers aged 18-35, shows EVs emerging as the top choice, especially in pollution-heavy emerging cities like Shanghai and Mexico City. While sustainability drives interest, adoption hinges on battery performance, charging access, and affordability.

  • Sustainability Focus: Over half of respondents prioritize reducing emissions, with emerging cities viewing it as urgent.
  • Tech Awareness: About 40% are excited by innovations like vehicle-to-everything (V2X) and energy storage.
  • Ownership Growth: One-third expect to own EVs within a decade, up significantly from today’s 23%.

“This research explores how the younger generations envision the future of mobility—an essential perspective, as their choices will directly shape the evolving mobility landscape,” said Ritu Bhandari, Asia-Pacific Sustainability lead at Economist Impact. Practicality remains key, with cities needing to blend environmental goals with affordable, accessible transport options.

Emerging Cities Drive EV Enthusiasm

The survey reveals a stark contrast between developed and emerging cities. In places like Sao Paulo, 44% of youth plan to drive EVs soon, compared to 31% in developed hubs. Pollution and congestion fuel this urgency, pushing demand for cleaner options. Meanwhile, respondents in wealthier cities focus more on EV costs, which remain a barrier despite growing interest.

Beyond mobility, EVs are seen as energy solutions. Half of respondents recognize their potential to store renewable energy or power devices, especially in emerging markets where such applications could aid during emergencies. This aligns with Nissan’s electrification push, as noted by Lavanya Wadgaonkar, Nissan’s corporate vice president of Global Communications: “We believe in making mobility electrified and sustainable—it is a defining expectation shaping the future of transportation.”

Nissan’s Role in Shaping Mobility

Nissan leverages these findings to refine its EV strategy, focusing on affordability, infrastructure, and innovation. By advancing battery tech and V2X solutions, the company aims to make EVs practical and widespread. The survey reinforces Nissan’s commitment to a sustainable, inclusive transport future, meeting the evolving demands of younger generations worldwide.
