EXEDY Corporation Acquires Protean Electric In-Wheel Motor Company

EXEDY Corporation has acquired Protean Electric, a developer of in-wheel motor technology for EVs, from BEDEO Group. The deal aims to bring ProteanDrive to industrial-scale production for OEM customers.

Protean Electric, a developer of in-wheel motor technology for electric vehicles, has been acquired by EXEDY Corporation, a global Tier 1 drivetrain supplier. EXEDY purchased Protean from BEDEO Group, which had owned the company since 2021. The deal positions Protean for industrial-scale production of its ProteanDrive system.

Highlights

  • EXEDY, a major drivetrain components manufacturer, acquires Protean Electric from vehicle electrification company BEDEO Group
  • Protean’s ProteanDrive system integrates drive motors directly into vehicle wheels, enabling OEMs to redesign platform architecture
  • Protean holds 320+ patents across 75 patent families and has achieved a production nomination from a mainstream OEM
  • The acquisition is intended to deliver cost-competitive, industrial-scale in-wheel motor supply to automotive OEMs

Strategic Rationale for EXEDY

EXEDY Corporation — a leading manufacturer of clutches, torque converters, and other drivetrain components — identified in-wheel motor technology as central to its electrification strategy. The acquisition gives EXEDY a production-ready EV drivetrain product with an established commercial track record.

EXEDY CEO Tetsuya Yoshinaga stated that the company intends to combine the technological strengths of both organizations to deliver competitive products and services. He described in-wheel motors — drive motors integrated directly into the wheel — as a key pillar of EXEDY’s long-term business direction.

What Protean Brings to the Deal

Protean Electric has spent years advancing its ProteanDrive platform through key industry milestones. Under BEDEO’s ownership, the company achieved several notable firsts:

  • Production nomination from a mainstream OEM
  • IATF 16949 industrialization of its Pd18 in-wheel motor product
  • Homologation of the first electric passenger vehicle equipped with in-wheel motors

Protean CEO Andrew Whitehead said the transaction gives OEM customers the confidence to commit to in-wheel motor platforms. He described the EXEDY acquisition as providing the industrial scale needed to turn the technology’s long-recognized potential into a commercially sustainable reality.

BEDEO’s Role and Ongoing Partnership

BEDEO CEO and founder Osman Boyner confirmed that his company’s involvement with Protean predates its 2021 acquisition. He noted that BEDEO will continue as a customer and partner in the retrofit market following the ownership transfer.
