First US Multi-State Bidirectional Charging Program

Bidirectional Energy and Wallbox have launched North America’s first multi-state bidirectional charging program, offering significant incentives to 180 households in California and Connecticut using the Kia EV9.

Bidirectional Energy, a software provider, and Wallbox, a global provider of EV charging solutions, have announced the launch of North America’s first multi-state bidirectional charging program. The program is open to 180 homes across California and Connecticut, enabling electric vehicles to serve as flexible energy resources.

Key Highlights

  • Pilots begin with 180 households in California and Connecticut.
  • The program combines the Wallbox Quasar 2 charger, the Kia EV9, and Bidirectional Energy’s VPP platform.
  • Technology allows EVs to provide backup power, offer bill savings, and support the electrical grid.
  • Participants may receive incentives up to $10,800 and earn additional income from grid services.

The initial pilots will utilize Wallbox’s Quasar 2 bidirectional charger and Bidirectional Energy’s virtual power plant (VPP) platform. Kia EV9 owners will be the first participants, leveraging the technology to save money and support the power grid. This initiative aims to accelerate the adoption of flexible energy systems in the UnitedStates, with plans to expand to other vehicles and homes later.

Developed with local utilities, the program offers participants substantial incentives. These include up to $8,800 in California and up to $10,800 in Connecticut for charger and installation costs. Additionally, participants may see estimated annual energy bill savings and grid support earnings of up to $1,500 in California and $1,350 in Connecticut.

Expanding EV Value for Consumers

Frances Bell, CEO at Bidirectional Energy, stated that a key aim is to “make it easy and desirable for drivers to unlock the full value of their EVs while supporting the grid.” As utility rates climb and outages become more common, bidirectional charging offers homeowners greater independence. Bidirectional Energy’s software platform helps EV owners cut bills, gain backup power, and earn from grid services.

The Quasar 2, Wallbox’s next-generation 12.48-kilowatt (kW) charger, allows EV owners to power their homes or send energy back to the grid. When paired with its Power Recovery Unit, the Quasar 2 can also provide critical backup power during an outage¹. Douglas Alfaro, Chief Business Development Officer at Wallbox, noted the technology’s potential to “transform how people use and manage energy at home,” empowering owners to turn vehicles into energy assets.

Program Enrollment and Qualifications

For the initial phase, homeowners in the two states must own or lease a Kia EV9. Interested parties can verify their home’s qualifications on the Bidirectional Energy website. After verification, the homeowner can purchase and schedule the installation of Wallbox hardware. Rebate reimbursement is handled by submitting receipts via the Bidirectional Energy app. Bidirectional Energy and its partners will manage utility interconnection and secure rebate payments.

Once installed, drivers can use the Bidirectional Energy app to “set and forget” charging preferences, including mileage buffers for daily driving needs. The app allows drivers to retain full control over how their vehicle charges and supports the grid.

To qualify, participants must reside in a single-family or small multi-family home (four units or fewer) and be customers of participating utilities. They must also agree to share charging data and enroll in grid-support programs. Priority populations constitute a significant portion of the target participants, reflecting a commitment to equitable energy access.
