GM Energy Accelerates Electric Vehicle Ecosystem

GM Energy is rapidly expanding its electric vehicle ecosystem through innovative products, key industry partnerships, and significant sales growth, positioning the company as a leader in home and public charging solutions.

As part of General Motors’ commitment to an all-electric future, its GM Energy division is building an ecosystem to accelerate electric vehicle adoption. The unit was established to expand access to reliable and convenient charging while empowering customers with greater control over their home energy usage. In the last 18 months, GM Energy has made significant progress, strengthening industry partnerships and positioning GM as a leader in electrification.

Key Highlights

  • Since January, the company has seen a 30% month-over-month revenue growth and a five-fold increase in sales volume for its charging and energy products.
  • Seven out of ten GM EV customers purchase a GM Energy product, with nearly 100,000 charging adapters sold to date.
  • The company is on track to deploy 35,000 GM Energy-invested public fast-charging stalls by 2030.
  • GM EV owners currently have access to a network of over 250,000 chargers across North America.

Customer-Focused Energy Solutions

A year after expanding its energy management products to all 50 states, GM Energy now offers a portfolio of ten innovative solutions. Key products include its vehicle-to-home (V2H) bidirectional charging technology, which allows compatible GM EVs to power a properly equipped home during a blackout. Another solution, the GM Energy PowerBank, is a stationary home energy battery that extends backup power capability and can store energy from the grid or solar installations. The company also provides charging adapters to ensure convenient connections for GM vehicles as the industry moves toward a single charging standard.

Expanding Industry Charging Access

GM Energy is collaborating with key industry players like EVgo, Pilot, and ChargePoint to expand access to fast and reliable public charging. The company is also an investor in IONNA, a joint venture founded by GM and other automakers. According to customer experience metrics, GM-invested charging sites rank in the top three networks. Beyond increasing the number of public chargers, the initiative focuses on improving the user experience by including amenities such as restrooms, food, and retail options. Many new stations feature awnings for weather protection and pass-through layouts to accommodate trucks towing trailers.

Powering the Future of the Grid

Electric vehicles present an opportunity for utilities to enhance grid resilience and manage demand through smart charging. GM Energy is working with utilities nationwide on innovative EV solutions, from free overnight charging programs in Texas to V2H pilots in California. These programs offer incentives and are paving the way for future vehicle-to-grid (V2G) technology, which will allow EVs to supply power back to the grid.

The company has taken a leading role in shaping industry standards, joining NEMA, the top organization for electrical standards, and advocating for the North American Charging Standard (NACS). Internally, GM Energy is integrated with product and brand teams to support GM’s transition to NACS, simplifying charging access for future vehicles. The 2026 Cadillac OPTIQ and the newly revealed 2027 Chevrolet Bolt will be the first GM vehicles with a native NACS inlet. The division is led by Wade Sheffer, a nearly 30-year veteran of General Motors.
