GM Recalls Cadillac Optiq, Chevrolet Equinox EV for Defective Tires

GM is recalling over 22,000 Cadillac Optiq and Chevrolet Equinox EVs over defective Continental tires that could experience tread detachment, increasing crash risk. Affected owners will receive free replacements.

  • 22,914 vehicles affected across Cadillac Optiq and Chevrolet Equinox EV models
  • Continental 21-inch all-season tires may suffer partial or full tread detachment
  • Caused by nonconforming tread base rubber compound manufactured in DOT week 4024
  • Dealers to inspect and replace affected tires free of charge beginning December 2025

General Motors has issued a safety recall covering certain 2025–2026 Cadillac Optiq and 2025–2026 Chevrolet Equinox EV models equipped with 21-inch Continental all-season tires (RPO QLT). The recall affects a total of 22,914 vehicles, following findings that some tires may have been produced with a nonconforming tread base rubber compound, leading to the potential for partial or full tread detachment.

Defect and Safety Risk

According to GM’s filing with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA Recall No. 25V704), the issue originates from Continental Tire the Americas, LLC, which discovered that certain tires manufactured during the week of October 6, 2024 (DOT week 4024) contained an inadequate sulfur level in the tread base compound. This defect may prevent proper adhesion, increasing the likelihood of tread separation and thus raising the risk of a crash.

Owners may notice localized tread wear, vibration, noise, or bulging in the tread area prior to failure.

Chronology of Events

GM’s Speak Up for Safety program first received a field report on August 25, 2025, concerning tread debonding on a 2025 Cadillac Optiq. Subsequent analysis by Continental confirmed the chemical defect and tied it to a specific production batch. On October 8, 2025, Continental initiated its own tire safety recall (NHTSA 25T017), prompting GM’s Safety Field Action Decision Authority to authorize this vehicle recall on October 9, 2025.

Remedy and Owner Notification

Dealers will inspect all four tires and replace any manufactured during DOT week 4024, at no cost to owners. GM will notify owners by mail starting December 1, 2025, with instructions for applying to Continental for reimbursement if prior replacement has occurred.

Owners can reach Cadillac customer service at 1-800-333-4223 or Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020, and may verify their VINs on NHTSA.gov/recalls.
