Honda is revolutionizing EV production with a $1 billion investment in its Ohio-based Honda EV Hub, reimagining manufacturing to integrate internal combustion engine (ICE), hybrid, and electric vehicles (EVs) on the same production lines. The first model to roll off the new production system will be the Acura RSX EV in late 2025, followed by models based on the Honda 0 Saloon and Honda 0 SUV prototypes introduced at CES 2025. Alongside the retooling of key manufacturing plants, Honda aims to create a more sustainable and human-friendly production environment while ensuring top-tier efficiency, quality, and adaptability to market trends.
Key Highlights
- Integrated Production: Honda’s Marysville Auto Plant (MAP), East Liberty Auto Plant (ELP), and Anna Engine Plant (AEP) will all support flexible manufacturing, producing ICE, hybrid, and EV models on the same lines.
- Next-Gen Models: The all-new Acura RSX EV will be the first battery electric model from the hub, followed by Honda 0 Series EVs.
- Sustainability Focus: Honda’s Triple Action to Zero initiative targets carbon neutrality, clean energy, and resource circulation for zero environmental impact by 2050.
- Advanced Technology: Introduction of ASIMO OS, an intelligent vehicle operating system designed for Honda 0 Series EVs.
- Strategic Partnerships: Honda and LG Energy Solution are investing $3.5 billion in a new joint venture battery facility, with a projected 40GWh annual capacity and production starting in late 2025.
- Ohio Manufacturing Legacy: With over 12,000 associates and $13 billion invested, Honda’s Ohio operations continue to drive innovation in both ICE and EV production.
Flexible EV Production and Sustainability Initiatives
The Honda EV Hub is designed to be adaptable, enabling quick shifts between ICE, hybrid, and EV production based on consumer demand. This future-proof approach allows Honda to respond to market shifts efficiently, ensuring its competitiveness in the evolving zero-emission vehicle landscape.
To support its Triple Action to Zero sustainability goals, Honda has introduced energy-saving initiatives across all three plants:
- Carbon Neutrality: New high-efficiency melt furnaces at AEP reduce natural gas consumption, while HVAC upgrades and energy-efficient lighting lower the carbon footprint.
- Clean Energy: Honda offsets over 60% of its electricity in North America through wind and solar power agreements.
- Resource Circulation: Scrap aluminum is melted onsite for reuse in battery cases and engines, and even old uniforms are repurposed into sound insulation for vehicles.
Honda’s EV Vision and Global Expansion
Honda’s investment in Ohio extends beyond EV production—it serves as the foundation for global EV manufacturing expertise. The Honda EV Hub will share best practices across Honda’s North American and global production network, ensuring efficient scaling of its EV strategy worldwide.
With over four decades of automotive manufacturing in Ohio, Honda continues its commitment to innovation, sustainability, and flexibility, positioning itself as a leader in the transition to electric mobility.
