Hyundai Motor Company has been recognized as a leader in fuel economy and emissions by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in its 2023 Automotive Trends Report. The report ranked Hyundai second only to Tesla in terms of fuel economy and the lowest in CO2 emissions among mainstream automakers.
Significant Improvements Over Five Years
Between 2017 and 2022, Hyundai reduced its CO2 emissions from 311 g/mi to 302 g/mi and improved its real-world fuel economy from 28.6 MPG to 29.1 MPG. This represents the most significant improvement among all mainstream automakers during this period.
Continued Commitment to Electrification
Hyundai is committed to its electrification efforts and currently offers 10 electric, hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and hydrogen-powered vehicles in the U.S., including the popular IONIQ 5 and IONIQ 6 models. In 2023, EVs made up 7% of Hyundai’s sales, a 103% increase compared to 2022. The company plans to introduce more than 17 new battery-electric vehicles globally and is targeting a 7% share of the global EV market by 2030.
Industry-Wide Trend Toward Efficiency
The EPA report also found that the auto industry as a whole saw its biggest annual improvements in fuel economy and CO2 emissions in the past nine years. New vehicles in 2023 are expected to further improve on these gains.
Commitment to the U.S.
Hyundai Motor America is committed to the U.S. market and has significant operations in the country, including its North American headquarters in California, the Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Alabama assembly plant, the Hyundai Motor Group Metaplant America (under development in Georgia), and several cutting-edge R&D facilities. These operations, combined with those of Hyundai’s 835 independent dealers, contribute $20.1 billion annually and 190,000 jobs to the U.S. economy.
