Hyzon has successfully completed a trial of North America’s first hydrogen fuel cell-powered refuse collection truck. Conducted in partnership with Mt. Diablo Resource Recovery (MDRR) and New Way Trucks, the trial aimed to showcase the viability of hydrogen as a sustainable and zero-emission solution for heavy-duty waste collection operations. The truck was tested on routes across several California locations, including Concord, Pittsburg, Oakley, Rio Vista, and parts of Contra Costa.
Key Highlights:
- Successful completion of North America’s first hydrogen-powered refuse truck trial.
- Trial conducted in partnership with Mt. Diablo Resource Recovery and New Way Trucks.
- Routes included cities across California, demonstrating hydrogen’s potential in real-world waste collection scenarios.
- Part of Hyzon’s broader effort to decarbonize heavy-duty industries through hydrogen fuel cell technology.
- Achieved fuel efficiency of up to 300% more compared to traditional diesel trucks.
Hyzon, is a U.S.-based leader in hydrogen fuel cell technology, focusing on zero-emission solutions for the most demanding sectors. This trial further underscores hydrogen’s role as a viable alternative to diesel, meeting California’s Advanced Clean Fleet requirements and advancing MDRR’s commitment to sustainability.
The hydrogen-powered refuse collection truck, built in partnership with New Way Trucks, showcases the strengths of both companies. Hyzon’s zero-emission power technology and New Way’s industry-leading refuse truck manufacturing expertise have brought a practical, zero-emission solution to the North American waste and recycling industry.
Parker Meeks, CEO of Hyzon, expressed pride in partnering with MDRR, stating, “This successful trial showcases the potential for hydrogen to drive meaningful decarbonization, without sacrificing performance, in challenging sectors like waste and recycling. We are excited to be driving forward hydrogen-powered solutions in collaboration with our customers that deliver both environmental and operational benefits.”
The trial demonstrated that Hyzon’s high-performance hydrogen fuel cell systems can deliver consistent power over an expected range of at least 125 miles, including 1,300 cart lifts, while offering a 300% increase in fuel efficiency compared to traditional diesel trucks. Kish Rajan, CEO of Mt. Diablo Resource Recovery, added, “We are relentless about innovation to transform the way we manage waste and recycling to maximize our environmental and financial performance.”
Don Ross, Chief Sales Officer for New Way, noted the collaboration’s impact: “We are in a unique position to provide alternative power solutions to waste haulers looking to meet zero emissions goals and decarbonization initiatives. And we look forward to continuing our partnership with Hyzon to field more hydrogen fuel cell refuse collection trucks that will set a new standard for our industry.”
This trial marks Hyzon’s tenth successful trial since July 2024 across its Class 8 and refuse collection FCETs. With ongoing trials involving more than 30 major fleets through February 2025, Hyzon continues to position itself at the forefront of the transition towards zero-emission, heavy-duty transportation solutions.
Hyzon is committed to advancing its Class 8 200kW FCET trial program and remains focused on scaling up its impact across North America. This successful trial is another testament to hydrogen fuel cell technology’s potential to transform heavy-duty transportation and support sustainability goals across industries.
