InductEV’s wireless EV charging technology has been named one of TIME’s Best Inventions of 2024 in the Sustainability category. Selected from thousands of global entries, the Pennsylvania-based company’s solution stood out for its originality, efficacy, ambition, and impact.
Key Highlights:
- Recognized as one of TIME’s 2024 Best Inventions.
- Awarded under the Sustainability category for reducing GHG emissions in commercial transport.
- High-power charging technology aimed at sectors like freight, buses, and airport vans.
The annual TIME Best Inventions list features 200 groundbreaking technologies, including 50 special mentions, that aim to redefine how people live, work, and think. InductEV earned a spot with its innovative approach to reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and improving charging efficiency in the commercial transport sector. InductEV’s work is addressing emissions produced by road freight vehicles, which collectively emit over 2 billion tons of CO2 annually, making up more than 6% of the world’s total emissions.
InductEV’s solution was highlighted for its potential to transform sectors such as ports, drayage, municipal buses, and freight vehicles. John F. Rizzo, President and CEO of InductEV, credited the company’s engineers for their contributions, stating, “InductEV’s engineers and our colleagues who support them deserve the lion’s share of praise for this prestigious recognition and the tireless work that led to it.” He noted that the commercial transport industry is at a tipping point in its electrification and decarbonization efforts, resulting in increased adoption of their wireless charging solution.
InductEV’s high-power wireless charging system uses inductive charging pads, with an in-ground pad activated upon pairing with an under-vehicle pad. Charging power ranges from 75 kW to 450 kW. This approach shifts the typical charging paradigm from time-consuming, overnight wired sessions to shorter, distributed charging sessions throughout the day, optimizing energy use and benefiting both fleet operators and power utilities.
In 2024, InductEV was awarded three new U.S. patents for its wireless charging technology, bringing the company’s patent portfolio to 105, with an additional 118 patents in process. Current deployments include:
- Seattle’s Sound Transit: Wireless charging for double-decker electric buses along major routes, with a projection that half of all battery-electric buses in Washington will be charged by InductEV by 2026.
- Port Elizabeth, NJ: First deployment of wireless charging for electric port tractors at the AP Moeller Maersk Terminal.
- Municipal Transit Buses: Active deployments in Indianapolis, Martha’s Vineyard, Oregon, and other locations.
- OEM Integration: Collaborations with Phoenix Motor Inc. and other vehicle manufacturers like MAFI, OrangeEV, BYD, Gillig, and Volvo for factory-integrated wireless charging.
- Volvo Partnership: Wireless charging support for a taxi fleet of 20 electric SUVs in Gothenburg, Sweden, and additional installations in Oslo.
