Lithion has been chosen as Hyundai Auto Canada Corp.’s official partner for the collection and recycling of electric vehicle (EV) batteries across Canada. This partnership follows an initial agreement from 2021 and aligns with Hyundai’s commitment to minimizing the carbon footprint of its EV lineup. Lithion’s expertise in sustainable battery recycling will support over 250 Hyundai and Genesis dealerships nationwide, enabling safe and efficient recycling of end-of-life batteries.
Key Highlights:
- Multi-year agreement between Lithion and Hyundai for EV battery recycling in Canada.
- Lithion’s recycling plant in Saint-Bruno will manage battery collection and recycling.
- Supports Hyundai’s sustainability goals and contributes to the circular economy.
Lithion’s role will encompass logistics, collection, dismantling, and recycling, ensuring batteries are processed in the safest and most efficient manner. Hyundai and Genesis dealers can reach out to Lithion for the recycling of end-of-life batteries, which will then be processed at Lithion’s recycling plant in Saint-Bruno, near Montreal.
This collaboration reflects both companies’ dedication to advancing the sustainable energy transition by fostering the circularity of battery materials. Ken Maisonville, executive director of customer experience and aftersales at Hyundai Auto Canada, noted, “This partnership with Lithion allows us to ensure optimal recycling of our batteries, all while doing business with a Canadian company.”
Yves Noël, vice president and chief business development officer at Lithion, echoed the sentiment, emphasizing the importance of this collaboration in paving the way for sustainable solutions in the automotive sector.
Since the completion of its first commercial plant in June 2024, Lithion has rapidly expanded its activities, signing multiple multi-year battery feedstock agreements with key industry players. This growth highlights Lithion’s critical role in a low-carbon energy future.
Lithion’s technology allows for the recovery of up to 98% of critical minerals in lithium-ion batteries, contributing to a significantly smaller environmental impact compared to traditional mining practices. The company’s goal is to deploy these sustainable technologies globally through strategic partnerships.
