High-performance SUVs have long been a core offering for AMG, starting over 25 years ago with the pioneering launch of the ML 55 AMG. The success of AMG’s high-performance off-roaders has only grown since, capturing customer demand and leading to the establishment of six distinct AMG SUV models today: GLA, GLB, GLC, GLE, GLS, and EQE SUV. The Mercedes-AMG G 63 remains the flagship of AMG’s high-performance off-roader lineup, retaining iconic status among enthusiasts.
The new SUV project sees Mercedes-AMG designing the entire vehicle architecture from the ground up. This upcoming full-size SUV will be the second model constructed on the all-electric AMG.EA platform, emphasizing AMG’s push into all-electric performance vehicles. In addition to the first AMG.EA model that is currently in testing, this vehicle becomes the sixth model fully developed by the specialists in Affalterbach, joining the likes of the GT, SL, SLS, and others.
“SUVs have been among our most popular models for many years. With the ‘Born in Affalterbach’ SUV, we are responding to this trend by offering our customers a truly captivating high-performance off-roader based on the AMG.EA platform. Our new high-performance architecture follows a clear philosophy: ‘AMG First, EV Second’. This means that the vehicles not only excel as electric vehicles but also embody the core AMG qualities of emotion and performance.” – Michael Schiebe, Chairman of the Board of Management of Mercedes‑AMG GmbH and Head of the Mercedes‑Benz G‑Class & Mercedes‑Maybach divisions.
Mercedes-AMG’s entry into the in-house, all-electric SUV market represents a continuation of the company’s tradition of innovation and excellence in high-performance vehicles. With the test drives expected to take place soon, the brand is gearing up for an exciting expansion of its electric high-performance offerings, further solidifying its position in the electric SUV segment.
