The 2026 Mitsubishi Outlander Plug-in Hybrid arrives at U.S. dealerships in May with a larger battery, more power, and interior and exterior updates. The refreshed PHEV now carries a 22.7 kWh battery — a 15% increase in capacity — delivering 45 miles of all-electric range and a combined 297 horsepower. Pricing starts at $43,245 MSRP before a $1,745 destination fee.
Highlights
- A new 22.7 kWh battery delivers 45 miles of EV range, with MPGe rising to 73 and total system output reaching 297 hp.
- An updated battery cooling system increases power output by 60% and extends electric operation to more driving scenarios.
- Interior updates include revised seating, cooled front seats on select trims, and an 8- or 12-speaker Yamaha audio system.
- The 2026 model arrives in four trims — ES, SE, SEL, and the new Black Edition — with every Outlander variant now electrified.
Powertrain and Battery Upgrades
The biggest changes for 2026 sit beneath the floor. The new battery cooling system and improved thermal management account for the 60% jump in power output, despite only a 15% increase in raw capacity. As a result, the Outlander PHEV can operate in electric mode across a wider range of driving conditions than before.
Retuned steering and revised suspension complement the added power. Together, the changes aim to make the Outlander PHEV feel more responsive behind the wheel.
Interior and Exterior Revisions
Inside, the 2026 PHEV inherits the mid-cycle refresh first applied to the 2025 Outlander ICE model. Updates include redesigned cupholders, a new wireless phone charging pad, enlarged armrest storage, and additional sound-deadening material throughout the cabin.
On the outside, a revised hood and front grille are designed to reduce wind noise. New front and rear bumpers, smoke-finish LED taillights, and 18- or 20-inch wheel designs round out the visual changes.
Electrified Lineup and Market Context
With the updated PHEV joining the new-for-2026 mild-hybrid Outlander, every model in the Outlander range is now electrified. That milestone aligns with Mitsubishi’s Momentum 2030 plan, which commits the brand to at least one new or significantly revised vehicle per year through fiscal 2030.
“The 2026 Outlander Plug-in Hybrid is the flagship of our U.S. fleet,” said Mark Chaffin, president and CEO of Mitsubishi Motors North America. “As the world’s first plug-in hybrid SUV, this is a technology that Mitsubishi Motors knows well.”
Chaffin added that the 2026 model builds on a formula that has earned Green Car Journal’s Family Green Car of the Year award four times. “The real change for 2026 is in the way the vehicle performs. More electric operation, improved acceleration, a quieter and more engaging driving experience,” he said.
Warranty and Availability
All 2026 Mitsubishi vehicles include the brand’s warranty package: a 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain limited warranty, a 5-year/60,000-mile new vehicle limited warranty, and a 2-year/30,000-mile maintenance program. Coverage terms apply from the original in-service date to the first owner.
The 2026 Outlander PHEV is expected at dealerships in early May.
